September 20 – 1319 Battle of Myton nicknamed the Chapter of Myton or The White Battle because of the number of clergy involved, was a major engagement in the First Scottish War of Independence, fought in Yorkshire.

1415 Owen Glendower The last independent prince of Wales died on September 20, 1415.  Glendower led a Welsh revolt, beginning in 1400, which began when neighbor Reginald Grey, 3rd Baron Grey de Ruthyn, failed to notify Glendower of Henry IV’s call to his Scottish campaign in 1400, then disingenuously charged Glendower with treason.  By the time Henry IV learned of the rebellion, Henry IV had difficulty quelling it. Walter Scott references Owen Glendower, and the setting in 1400, in a publication titled “Scotland”, by Sir Walter Scott, In 1400, Henry [IV] therefore summoned the whole military force of England to meet him at York, and published an arrogant manifesto, in which Henry vindicated the antiquated claim of supremacy, which had been so long in abeyance, and, assuming the tone of lord paramount, commanded the Scottish king, with his prelates and nobles, to meet him at Edinburgh and render homage. Of course no one attended upon that summons, excepting the new proselyte March, who met Henry at Newcastle, and was received to the English fealty. But if Henry’s boast of subjecting Scotland was a bravado inconsistent with his usual wisdom, his warfare, on the contrary, was marked by a degree of forbearance and moderation too seldom the characteristic of an English invader. Penetrating as far as Edinburgh, he extended his especial protection to the canons of Holyrood, from whom his father, John of Gaunt, had experienced shelter, and in general spared religious houses. The castle of Edinburgh was gallantly held out by the Duke of Rothsay, aided by the skill and experience of his father-in-law, the Earl of Douglas. Albany commanded a large army, which, according to the ancient Scottish policy, hovered at some distance from the English host.

Edinburgh is about 50 miles from the River Tweed and the English border.

The Scots had wisely resolved upon the defensive system of war which had so frequently saved Scotland. But they could not forbear some of the bravado of the time. The Duke of Rothsay wrote to Henry that, to avoid the effusion of Christian blood, he was willing to rest the national quarrel upon the event of a combat of one, two, or three nobles on every side. Henry laughed at this sally of youthful vivacity, and, in answer, expressed his wonder how Rothsay should think of saving Christian blood at the expense of shedding that of the nobility, who, it was to be hoped, were Christians as well as others. Albany also would have his gasconade. Albany sent a herald to Henry to say that, if he would stay in his position near Edinburgh for six days, Albany would do battle with Henry to the extremity. The English king gave his mantle and a chain of gold to the herald, in token that he joyfully accepted the challenge. But Albany had no purpose of keeping his word; and Henry found nothing was to be won by residing in a wasted country to beleaguer an impregnable rock. He raised the siege and retired into England, where the rebellion of Owen Glendower soon after broke out. A truce of twelve months and upward took place between the kingdoms.’ 16th-century painting of Henry IV, caption HENRICVS IIII by unknown artist.

1643 First Battle of Newbury.

1697 Treaty of Rijswijk (Dutch republic) ended the Nine Years’ War, or War of the Grand Alliance. Louis XIV recognised William Stewart as Willian 3rd King of England, 2nd of Scotland, and undertook to give no further assistance to James II (VII) Stuart.

Louis XIV of France was William 2nd‘s life-long enemy; an uneasy peace agreed in 1697 was soon broken. The Grand Alliance was Britain, Spain, the Holy Roman Empire and the United Provinces.

St. Quivox’ earlier name was Sanquhar-in-Kyle; its church was dedicated to St. Kevoc. But confusion arose because Sanquhar-in-Nithsdale, made famous by its martyrs of the Killing Time (1685-1688), was better known; the parish name was changed to St. Kevoc’s, and became corrupted to St. Quivox.

From 1221 until 1239, the church had belonged to a nearby Gilbertian priory of St. Mary at Dalmulin, founded by Walter, 3rd High Steward of Scotland, with brethren of the Order of St. Gilbert of Sempringham, from Sixel in Lincolnshire. (The order admitted both men and women, though so far as is known there were no women at this, its only establishment in Scotland.) In 1238 when relations between England and Scotland were in one of their periodic crises, the Gilbertians removed themselves south of the border. Their priory then became, and remained until the Reformation (1560), a cell of Paisley Abbey.

1953 The Number one dime, published, and is the first coin that Scrooge McDuck ever earned or produced. The dime is a key plot in stories featuring Magica De Spell, a character invented by Carl Barks, as the main villain. Magica believes that by stealing the first coin earned by the richest duck in the world and melting it down to a magical amulet, Magica can gain the power of the ancient King Midas, so that everything she touches becomes gold and she can be rich beyond her wildest dreams. This will only work if the coin indeed belongs to the richest person in the world at the time, and is the first coin that person earned, is crucial, and is made into a plot point in some stories.

Story by Don Rosa. The number one dime is an U.S. 1875 Seated Liberty dime. Scrooge earned the silver dime in 1877 in his hometown of Glasgow, when he started working as a shoeshine boy on his tenth birthday.[21] Before that it belonged to Howard Rockerduck (the father of John D. Rockerduck). The customer who paid it to him, a ditch-digger called Burt, “cheated” Scrooge (Seated Liberty dimes were discontinued in 1891). In reality, Scrooge’s father, Fergus McDuck, gave Burt the dime specifically for paying Scrooge for his services.

2014 ’’ In our opinion: The Scots have set an example for how to conduct an election.’’

A Saltire and Union Jack flag hang side by side on a building in Edinburgh, Scotland, Friday, Sept. 19, 2014. Scottish voters have rejected independence and decided that Scotland will remain part of the United Kingdom. The result announced early Friday was the one favored by Britain’s political leaders, who had campaigned hard in recent weeks to convince Scottish voters to stay. Those who supported — and likely still support — Scottish independence from the U.K. can no longer be dismissed as a fringe group. the promises the “Yes” camp have secured from Parliament are significant, and they will greatly increase Scotland’s ability to steer its own ship of state. http://www.deseretnews.com/article/865611387/The-Scots-have-set-an-example-for-how-to-conduct-an-election.html?pg=all
