September 18 1644 Sir John Meldrum (died 1645, clan Meldrum) took part in the defeat of Lord Byron before Montgomery Castle. ‘Sir John Meldrum,’ says Sir William Brereton’s letter, ‘did with much judgment order and command these forces, and therefore deserves a large share in the honour of this day’s success’ (Phillips, Civil War in Wales, ii. 201). Meldrum, however, bitterly complained that the newspapers gave all the credit of the victory to Brereton (Cal. State Papers, Dom. 1644–5, p. 6). In February 1645 he returned to Yorkshire to besiege Scarborough, which was held by Sir Hugh Cholmley for the king [Charles Stewart]. Meldrum stormed the town early in February, but was mortally wounded in a sally during May.

1715 {the ’15) The honourable Colonel John Hay, brother to the Earl of Kinnoul, took, however, an opportunity to collect together some fifty or a hundred horse from the gentlemen of Stirling, Perthshire, and Fife, and marched towards the town. Duke of Athole remained attached to the Government, his eldest son was in the Earl of Mar’s army, gave way to their own inclinations, which were decidedly Jacobitical, and joined Colonel Hay, for thy purpose of disarming the Whig burghers, [TG67-274]

2014 Non Event of the week, Thursday. Scots vote on whether to withdraw from the United Kingdom. Here was some of the discussion on the vote from the Guardian.

‘the West Lothian question – the anomaly whereby Scottish MPs are able to vote on English-only matters while MPs from south of the border have no say over devolved matters such as health and education at Holyrood. . . . The Lib Dem cabinet minister will also say that the strong engagement of 16- and 17-year-old voters in the referendum showed that this age group should be allowed to vote in next year’s UK general election.’

‘Scotland said no to independence by 55.3% to 44.7%.’

‘I’m a data geek,’ says City trader, of Pakistani-German, who bet £900,000 on Scotland’s No vote. Anonymous gambler says he put 30 years as a market analyst to good use and denies being feckless or superficial. He had also studied the Quebec referendum in 1995, when the yes vote spiked sharply close to polling day. But as in Quebec, the no campaign made a stronger offer of new powers at the last stage, enough to cement their lead and too late to allow the yes campaign to respond. Yes policy pledges and tactics, such the allegations that Scotland’s NHS was under threat, used by Alex Salmond, the first minister and Scottish National party leader, were “a momentum of vapours”, Peter said. “Then they [the pro-union campaign] released the kraken, this Norse mythic god called Gordon Brown, who came with exactly the presence” the no campaign needed.’

‘The issue of England’s place in the union has become controversial after Westminster leaders promised greater devolution for Scotland if it voted against independence. Under pressure from backbenchers arguing that England is getting a raw deal, Cameron said on Friday that negotiations on only English MPs voting on English laws “must take place in tandem with, and at the same pace, as the settlement for Scotland”. Labour, which has 40 Scottish MPs, has dismissed Cameron’s plans as being drawn up too hastily and unveiled proposals for a constitutional convention next year to address political reform while consulting with the public.’

Turnout 84.6% Yes 1,617,989 No 2,001,926

By Council, No Vote listed (stay with the United Kingdom)

Aberdeen 41.4, Aberdeenshire 39.6, Angus 43.7, Argyll and Bute 41.5, Clackmannanshire 46.2, Dumfries and Galloway 34.3, Dundee 57.3, East Ayrshire 47.2, East Dunbartonshire 38.8, East Lothian 38.3, East Renfrewshire 36.8, Edinburg 38.9, Eilean Star 46.6, Falkirk 46.5, Fife 45, Glasgow 53.5, Highland 47.1, Inverclyde 49.9, Midlothian 43.7, Moray 42.4, North Ayrshire 49, Orkney Islands 32.8, Perth and Kinross 39.8, Renfrewshire 47.2, Scottish Borders 33.4, Shetland Islands 36.3, South Ayrshire 42.1, South Lanarkshire 45.3, Stirling 40.2, West Dunbartonshire 54, West Lothian 44.8.

So only 3 councils voted no, (the major cities) the others yes. And The No votes have it. But the math numbers don’t compute, as no place had 55% no, so how could the whole have 55% no?
