1555 Master Christopher Goodman of England BD (1520–1603) One of 24 Lords of the Congregation was an English reforming clergyman and writer. The congregation at Geneva chose John Knox and Goodman in September 1555 for their pastors, and the two formed a lifelong friendship. During his exile Goodman took part in Miles Coverdale’s translation of the Bible, and helped Knox in the “book of common order”. In June 1559 Knox asked Goodman to join Knox at Edinburgh, and Goodman went to Scotland early in September, acting as escort to Knox’s wife and family from Geneva. In October Goodman was made one of the council appointed by the lords of the congregation to treat of religion, Goodman and Knox preaching daily. In November Goodman became minister of Ayr. In the following July Goodman was appointed to St. Andrews. Goodman also went about Scotland preaching, and in August 1560 spent ten days in the Isle of Man, where he preached twice. 1560 was the watershed year establishing alliance with Protestant England and the end of the Auld Alliance with France. Two years later Goodman and Knox together visited some of the reformed churches in Scotland.

1701 – James VII (7th of Scotland, 2nd of England) died, reigned 1685–1688 Château de Saint-Germain-en-Laye, France aged 67.

The name of the Jacobite movement derives from deposed Stuart monarch James II (of England) and VII (of Scotland). Tytler’s History of Scotland from Encyclopaedia Britannica at 213 (1845). Charles II was succeeded by his brother, who assumed the title of James the Second of England, and Seventh of Scotland. James accession brought no relief to the persecuted Covenanters. The laws for apprehending, examining, and executing on the spot those suspected of adherence to the Covenant, were enforced with the same relentless severity. The administering or receiving the Covenant, or even writing in its defense, the refusal to bear evidence against a person accused of treason, assembling together, and many other offences of a similar kind, were all declared treasonable, and punished by swift death, without trial, and confiscation. These cruel and oppressive measures would lead to a hatred of James. The American Bill of Rights was a reaction to these laws of the previous century.

1721 Sir John Fielding (16 September 1721 – 4 September 1780) was a notable English magistrate and social reformer of the 18th century. He was also the younger half-brother of novelist, playwright and chief magistrate Henry Fielding. Henry’s bookseller was Andrew Millar 6th (clans Stewart, Lockhart, Hunter).

1877 Seventeen Scots previously appeared to Wilford Woodruff in visions or dreams. “I will here say that two weeks before I left St. George, the spirits of the dead gathered around me, wanting to know why we did not redeem them. Said they, ‘You have had the use of the Endowment House for a number of years, and yet nothing has ever been done for us. We laid the foundation of the government you now enjoy, and we never apostatized from it, but we remained true to it and were faithful to God … .1 straight way went into the baptismal font and called upon Brother McAllister to baptize me for the signers of the Declaration of Independence, and fifty other eminent men, making one hundred in all, including John Wesley, Columbus, and others.
