1241 King Alexander III of Scotland (1241–1286) born. Recognised as a Tanist of the Scottish throne. Tanist is the heir apparent to a Celtic chief, elected during the Chief’s lifetime.  Coronation of King Alexander 3rd on Moot Hill, Scone. Alexander 3rd is being greeted by the ollamh rígh, the royal poet, who is addressing him with the proclamation “Benach De Re Albanne” (= Beannachd Dé Rígh Alban, “God Bless the King of Scotland”); the poet goes on to recite Alexander’s genealogy. By Alexander’s side is Maol Choluim II, Earl of Fife holding the sword.

 

1297 Battle of Stirling Bridge. First War of Scottish Independence.   Forces of Andrew Moray and William Wallace defeated the combined English forces of John de Warenne, 7th Earl of Surrey and Hugh de Cressingham, the Treasurer, insisted on the fight, near Stirling, on the River Forth. Clan Jardine, fought against William Wallace and in support of the English at the Battle of Stirling Bridge in 1297.

Wallace resolved to attack when the English attempted the crossing. On the morning of the 11th, the English army began to cross the bridge, narrow enough for 2 horseman abreast. With half across, Wallace attacked. Thousands were cut, multitudes drowned. Cressingham was slain, and Surrey fled to Berwick without ‘drawing bridle.’ After the defeat, almost all the fortresses of the kingdom surrendered to Wallace, who was chosen governor of Scotland. Isle of Man, knight errant with sword of truth and virtue.

Stirling is on the river feeding the Firth of Forth. The Bridge was a crossing location to the North.

1489 Pope Innocent VIII, in conflict with King Ferdinand I of Naples over Ferdinand’s refusal to pay feudal dues to the papacy, excommunicated and deposed Ferdinand by a bull of 11 September 1489.

1547 day after the Battle of Pinkie. William Patten described the English officers of the Ordnance retrieving 30 of the Scottish guns after the battle, which lay in sundry places, on Sunday 11 September. They found; one brass culverin; 3 brass sakers; 9 smaller brass pieces; and 17 other iron guns mounted on carriages. Some of these guns appear in the English royal inventory of 1547-8, at the Tower of London where sixteen Scottish brass guns were recorded. There were; a demi-cannon; 2 culverins; 3 sakers; 9 falconets; and a robinet. 1649 – Siege of Drogheda ends: Oliver Cromwell’s English Parliamentarian troops take the town and execute its garrison. His mother, Elizabeth Cromwell (Stewart or Steward) (1565 – 1654), was married to Robert Cromwell, was the daughter of Sir Thomas and Elizabeth Stuart of the Isle of Ely, Knight, descended from the Royal Family of Stuart in Scotland.

1745 Charles Edward leaves Perth (77-119). As remembered by Sir Walter Scott. Also called The ‘Young Pretender’, ‘Bonnie Prince Charlie’   The events would be known simply as ‘the ’45.’ It lead to ‘cleansing’ of Scotland, removing tens of thousands to the North American Station, never to return. Half of the American founding fathers, within 3 decades, had Scots roots.

1752 did not occur in England or British America. The English civil year started on 25 March until 1752 (Scotland having changed to 1 January in 1600). Eleven days did not occur in September 1752 in both England and Scotland, as well as other British controlled territories – America, (when the day after 2 September was 14 September), so as to bring the British Empire fully in line with the Gregorian calendar.

2001 Global War on Terror. NATO’s war clause is activated, to wit, an attack on any member is an attack on all. Armed forces of the United States of America   and the United Kingdom , and the Afghan United Front (Northern Alliance) , launched Operation Enduring Freedom in response to the September 11 attacks on the United States. The International Security Assistance Force (ISAF) was established by the UN Security Council at the end of December 2001 to secure Kabul and the surrounding areas. NATO   assumed control of ISAF in 2003. ISAF includes troops from 42 countries, with NATO members providing the core of the force. Lockerbie bombing of Pan Am Flight 103 on 21 December 1988 when the wreckage fell on the town of Lockerbie in the Dumfries and Galloway region of south-western Scotland. The President’s Commission on Aviation Security and Terrorism, PCAST team (Senator Alfonse D’Amato, Senator Frank Lautenberg, Representative John Paul Hammerschmidt, Representative James Oberstar, General Thomas Richards, deputy commander of U.S. forces in West Germany, and Edward Hidalgo, former Secretary of the U.S. Navy) submitted their report, with its 64 recommendations, on 15 May 1990, eleven years, three months, and twenty six days before 9/11.

2012 September 11. John Christopher Stevens, Ambassador to Libya, assassinated in Benghazi Libya September 11, 2012, a graduate of Hastings College of Law San Francisco 1989, California. Stevens’ father was Jan S. Stevens, a Yolo County Superior Court judge, Davis city councilman and California Assistant Attorney General, and his wife Mary (née Floris) J. Stevens, a Chinook Indian and cousin of Chinook elder Catherine Troeh. Mary Floris is a great-great-great grand daughter of Elvamox, daughter of Chief Comcomly of the Chinook Tribe, who gave assistance to the Lewis and Clark expedition when it arrived at the mouth of the Columbia River in 1805. Chinook Chief Comcomly (1765 – 1830) of the Columbia River Cascade Range Pacific coast. Comcomly’s daughter Elvamox, also known as Marianne, married Duncan McDougall Jr. of the Astor Expedition, and after McDougall left she married Etienne Alexis Aubichon, also a fur trader. She was the mother of one son and six daughters. Another of Comcomly’s daughters, Raven, also known as Princess Sunday, married Archibald McDonald. Sunday was the mother of Ranald MacDonald.
