English under command of Percy, Neville and great northern barons, with the archbishops of Canterbury and York, and the bishops of Durham, Carlisle, and Lincoln. David, and the Knight of Liddesdale, Earls of Fife, Menteith, Sutherland, and Wigton, 50 barons and knights, were taken prisoners. De la Haye, the Constable, Keith the Marshal, Chartres the High Chancellor, and Peebles the Lord Chamberlain, with the earls of Moray and Strathern, and 30 barons and 15,000 men were slain. 1551 – John Dudley, 1st Duke of Northumberland overthrew Edward Seymour to become the new regent of the English king [Edward VI]. Knox condemned the coup d’état in a sermon on All Saints Day. When Dudley visited Newcastle and listened to his preaching in June 1552, he had mixed feelings about the fire-brand preacher, but he saw Knox as a potential asset.

1632 On 17 October 1632, the Court of Star Chamber banned all “news books” because of complaints from Spanish and Austrian diplomats that coverage of the Thirty Years’ War in England was unfair. [Unfair? What is that?]

1642 King Charles (later the 1st) passed through Birmingham, England, the towns folk seized the Kings carriages, containing the royal plate and furniture, which they conveyed for security to Warwick Castle, a parliamentary stronghold. The same day there was a skirmish at Kings Norton.

1701 Duke of Perth created before 17 October 1701 for Drummond still extant for the 4th Earl of Perth, also Duke of Melfort from 2 July 1800 to 28 February 1902. Marquess of Drummond created before 17 October 1701 for Drummond     extant a subsidiary title of the Duke of Perth.

1829 Scots Roman Type, prepared in Glasgow Scotland, and shipped to a foundry in Albany New York, then delivered to the E. B. Grandin Printing company in Palmyra New York, according to the Crandall Gutenberg Printing Museum in Provo Utah. The Scots Roman type is the font used to print the first edition of the Book of Mormon. The contract with E. B. Grandin’s print shop to print the book was signed on Tuesday 25 Aug 1829, and the completed book was on sale by Friday 26 March 1830. Typesetter John H. Gilbert selects type and inserts commas, periods, and other punctuation as Gilbert reads Oliver Cowdery’s hand written copy. One form signarture of 16 pages, in quantities of 5,000 copies will be printed per 6 day 11 hour per day week. 1939 Scapa Flow. Ju.88’s struck at Scapa Flow and the old gunnery training battleship “Iron Duke” was bomb-damaged and had to be beached. German destroyers and later other surface vessels started laying mines off the British East Coast. Aircraft also attacked the East Coast convoy routes, but initially without success. In defence, it took some months for RAF Fighter Command to arrange effective sweeps, but there were too few AA guns to arm merchantmen

1963 Astronaut Group 3 was the third group of astronauts selected by NASA. Four died in training accidents before they could fly in space. All of the surviving ten flew in the Apollo program; five also flew Gemini missions. Aldrin, Bean, Cernan and Scott walked on the Moon.

David R. Scott, USAF Gemini 8, Apollo 9, Apollo 15  Command Module Pilot, (born June 6, 1932) first all-up test flight of Apollo spacecraft Apollo 9, Commanded the fourth manned lunar landing. Seventh man to walk on the moon. Boy Scouts of America, where he achieved its second highest rank, Life Scout.

A chart showing Group 3 assignments in Gemini and Apollo in relation to assignments from other astronaut groups. It shows how the surviving members of this group flew on Apollo, providing more moonwalkers than any other group (four), with half of the group (seven) making it to lunar orbit. This group also bore the brunt of casualties, with four members dying in the span of three years.
