In January 1496, Catherine was ordered by King James IV of Scotland to marry Yorkist pretender Perkin Warbeck, who, financed by Margaret, Duchess of Burgundy and supported by many others including the Scots king (James 4th ) and Maximilian I, Holy Roman Emperor, claimed to be Richard of Shrewsbury, 1st Duke of York, the younger son of King Edward IV of England. The marriage was celebrated in Edinburgh with a tournament. James IV gave Warbeck clothes for the wedding and armour covered with purple silk. The historian Katie Stevenson suggests the clothing bought for the tournament shows Perkin fought in a team with the king and four knights. A copy of a love letter in Latin obtained by Pedro de Ayala, is thought to be Perkin’s proposal to Lady Catherine. Lady Catherine was kept a prisoner by King Henry 7tm Tudor of England, who placed her in the household of his consort, Elizabeth of York where Catherine became a favoured Lady-in-Waiting. Initially, Henry VII paid some of her expenses from his privy purse. In the purse accounts her name was recorded as ‘Lady Kateryn Huntleye.
