Honorius Bishop, servant of the servants of god, to his dearest son in Christ Alexander the illustrious King of the Scots and his successors for ever. Though all the faithful ought to find patronage and favour with the Apostolic See, it is meet nevertheless that those should be more especially cherished by its protecting care, whose fidelity and devotion it has most abundantly experienced, in order that they may be incited to a greater fervour of affection for it and submit themselves with a more devoted reverence, according as they more surely know that they have secured a pledge of its goodwill and favour. For this reason dearest son in Christ, moved by the reverence and devotion which we know thou and thy predecessors to have had towards the Roman Church from remote times, we, by the present writing following the example of our predecessors of happy memory Celestine and Innocent Roman pontiffs, strictly charge that, seeing the Scottican Church to the Apostolic see, like a special daughter is immediately subject, in which these are known to be the Episcopal sees, namely, the Church of St. Andrew, Dumblain, the Church of Glasgow, Dunkeld, Brechin, the Church of Aberdeen, the Church of Murev, the Church of Ros and the Church of Katenes, it be lawful to no one except the Roman Pontiff or a legate send de latere, to publish sentence of interdict or excommunication against the kingdom of Scotland, and if it be pronounced we declare that it shall be of no strength. We add moreover that it shall not be lawful for the future for any one not of the kingdom of Scotland unless one whom the Apostolic See has specially sent for this purpose from its own body, to exercise the functions of a Legate in it. We forbid also that controversies which may arise in that kingdom concerning its possessions be carried for judgment before judges without the kingdom, unless an appeal shall have been made to the Church of Rome.         Etc.         Saint Peter, Saint Paul. Signed by Bishop of the Catholic Church, Holy Cross, Bishops of Preneste, Sabina, Saint Sergiu, Bachus deacon, Tullian Prison deacon, Saint Anastasia, Stephen of Saint Adrian Deacon.

1232 Matilda of Chester, Countess of Huntingdon inherited a share in Ranulf’s estates with her other 3 sisters, and Ranulf’s Earldom of Chester suo jure. Less than a month later with the consent of the King, Matilda gave an inter vivos gift of the Earldom to her son John the Scot who became Earl of Chester by right of his mother. He was formally invested by King Henry III as Earl of Chester on 21 November 1232. He became Earl of Chester in his own right on the death of his mother six weeks later.

1525 On 21 November, Francis attempted an assault on Pavia through two of the breaches, but was beaten back with heavy casualties; hampered by rainy weather and a lack of gunpowder, the French decided to wait for the defenders to starve.[the auld alliance with Scotland].

1638 General Assembly of the Church of Scotland met in Glasgow on 21 November 1638. Henderson was chosen moderator by acclamation, being, as Baillie says, incomparablie the ablest man of us all for all things. James Hamilton, 1st Duke of Hamilton, was the king’s commissioner; and when the Assembly insisted on proceeding with the trial of the bishops, he formally dissolved the meeting under pain of treason. Acting on the constitutional principle that the king’s right to convene did not interfere with the church’s independent right to hold assemblies, they sat till 20 December, deposed all the Scottish bishops, excommunicated a number of them, repealed all acts favoring episcopacy, and reconstituted the Scottish Kirk on thorough Presbyterian principles. During the sitting of this Assembly it was carried by a majority of seventy-five votes that Henderson should be transferred to Edinburgh.

1939 Recently completed light cruiser “Belfast” was badly damaged in the Firth of Forth on a magnetic mine laid by “U-21”. With her back broken and machinery mountings shattered she was out of action for three years. Magnetic Mines – German seaplanes also laid the first magnetic mines off the East Coast and dropped one on tidal flats at Shoeburyness in the Thames Estuary. It was defused on the 23rd November and recovered by Lt-Cdr Ouvry (awarded the George Cross), a vital step in the battle against a weapon which was causing heavy losses and long shipping delays. In November alone, 27 ships of 121,000 tons were sunk and for a time the Thames Estuary was virtually closed to shipping. The first HN/ON convoys sailed between the Firth of Forth and Norway in November covered by the Home Fleet. The convoys were discontinued in April 1940 with the loss of Norway. www.naval-history.net/WW2
