1418 John the Fearless captured Paris, but not before the Dauphin (the traditional name of the heir apparent to the throne of France), the future Charles VII of France, had escaped. John then installed himself in the city and made himself protector of the King. Although not an open ally of the English, John did nothing to prevent the surrender of Rouen in 1419. Wikipedia. 1431 Joan of Arc, Visionary. Executed burned at the Stake. Died age 19. Patron Saint of France. Hundred Years War. Extends auld alliance for more than a century until 1560.

Joan of Arc’s Death at the Stake, by Hermann Stilke (1843). Joan lead armies for Charles Vii of France, against English armies of Henry VI (age 10), captured by Philip III of Burgundy. Scotland and France were the Auld Alliance (from 1173 or 1295 to 1560). France was on the brink of surrendering to the forces of Henry V and in 1418 the Dauphin, Charles VII, called on his Scottish allies for help. Between 1419 and 1424 as many as 15,000 Scottish troops were sent to France.

French and Scottish forces together won against the English at the Battle of Baugé in 1421. As it marked the turning point of the Hundred Years War, the significance of this battle was great. However, their victory was a short-lived one: at Verneuil in 1424, the Scots army was defeated. Despite this defeat, the Scots had given France a valuable breathing space, effectively saving the country from English domination.

In addition, in 1429 Scots came to the aid of Joan of Arc in her famous relief of Orléans. Scottish soldiers also served in the Garde Écossaise, the loyal bodyguard of the French monarchy. Many Scottish mercenaries chose to settle in France. Some were granted lands and titles in France.

Mackenzie appears as a character in the fictional Scrooge McDuck comic book, The Buckaroo of the Badlands (1992), set in 1882, in which the poor, newly-hired Scrooge, helped by Theodore Roosevelt, rescues a championship bull belonging to Mackenzie.

2012 Picturing history: Bishopton, Scotland.  The first LDS missionaries to take the gospel to Scotland were Alexander Wright and Samuel Mulliner. Following their conversion to the gospel in Canada, these two met en route to Great Britain and were counseled to go to their native homeland of Scotland. Feeling that their preaching should begin with their own families they separated. Wright walked for days to find his family in Marnock only to be sequestered from them because he was suffering from smallpox. Mulliner began his labors in the area of Glasgow. On Jan. 14, 1840, Mulliner baptized Alexander and Jessie Hay of Bishopton in the River Clyde. It is believed that those were the first baptisms of the church in Scotland. Mulliner also conducted the first LDS sacrament service in Scotland, also in Bishopton.
