It was either in this pre-Reformation church or in the graveyard that William Wallace concluded the peace between England and Scotland on 8th February, 1297 and it was in this same place that Sir John Monteith contracted with the English to betray Wallace.

The Scottish Parliament called by the Guardians of Scotland met on 10th May 1300 in the mediaeval church. The area round the church and graveyard was once the site of an important ‘Fair’. In his Book of Common Order published in 1564, John Knox lists what he called the ‘Fairies of Scotland’ i.e. Fairs of Scotland. St. Luke’s Fair is listed as being held on October 18th in ‘Ruglane’.

1687 James 7th (King of Scots, clan Stuart) issued letters patent “reviving and restoring the Order of the Thistle to its full glory, lustre and magnificency” on 29 May 1687. James VII claimed that he was reviving an earlier Order. A tradition that the order was instituted, or re-instituted, on the battlefield by Robert the Bruce at Bannockburn.

James III (clan Stewart), who adopted the thistle as the royal plant badge and issued coins depicting thistles, founded the Order during the fifteenth century. Others state that James V (clan Stewart), who had been admitted to the Order of the Golden Fleece in the Holy Roman Empire, the Order of St Michael in France, and the Order of the Garter in England, established the Order of the Thistle in 1540 because he was embarrassed that he had no honour to confer on foreign monarchs.

James V perhaps conferred membership of the “Order of the Burr or Thissil” on King Francis I of France. A French commentator writing in 1558 described the use of the crowned thistle and the cross of St Andrew on Scottish coins and war banners, and added that there was no Scottish order of knighthood. Similarly, Bishop John Lesley writing a history of Scotland around 1578, refers to the three foreign orders of chivalry carved on the gate of James V’s Linlithgow Palace with his ornaments of St Andrew, proper to this nation. Some Scottish order of chivalry may have existed during the sixteenth century, possibly founded by James V and called the Order of St. Andrew, but lapsed by the end of that century. 1899  David O. McKay, age 25, from 1951 9th President of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter Day Saints. Father was from Thurso, Scotland. Elder McKay attended missionary meeting in Scotland.  He later wrote ‘I remember as if it were but yesterday, the intensity of the inspiration of that occasion. Everybody felt the rich outpouring of the Spirit of the Lord. All present were truly of one heart and one mind. Never before had I experienced such an emotion. It was a manifestation for which as a doubting youth I had secretly prayed most earnestly on hillside and in meadow. It was an assurance to me that sincere prayer is answered ‘sometime, somewhere.’ During the progress of the meeting, an elder on his own initiative arose and said, ‘Brethren, there are angels in this room.’ Strange as it may seem, the announcement was not startling; indeed, it seemed wholly proper, though it had not occurred to me there were divine beings present. I only knew that I was overflowing with gratitude for the presence of the Holy Spirit.” Cherished Experiences from the Writings of President David O. McKay, 4–5. President McKay.

1940 Scotland. Chapter ‘The Fall of France, Back to France.’ Generations of gun controls and gun bans, gun taxes, and gun confiscations, had disarmed the families, farmers, city dwellers, of the Poles, and disarmed the neutral Belgians and Dutch, and disarmed the French, Scots, and English. Also, the Czechs, Danes, Austrians, Baltic states, Norwegians, all accepted gun bans.   Relying, as each supposed on their police and armies. Armies using mules and riding horses. Something out of the 17th century. The families and churches were all to pay very dearly for such short sightedness. Terrible and crushing evils, murders, would be unleashed on a defenseless, helpless and unarmed populace. The shock of Nazi attack devastated Poland, Belgium, Netherlands, Luxembourg, and France. Within a week the front in France *** was to be irretrievably broken. *** The British Army to be hurled into the sea with all its equipment lost. Within six weeks we were to find ourselves alone, almost DISARMED, with triumphant Germany and Italy at our throats, with the whole of Europe in Hitler’s power, and Japan glowering on the other side of the globe.’

Churchill, in behalf of the British, begged Roosevelt, for any arms, rifles, ammo, pistols, anything America would spare.
