1590 James 6th and Anne of Denmark (age 14) returned to Scotland on 1 May 1590, from Norway. Shortly after a proxy marriage in Copenhagen in August 1589, Anne sailed for Scotland but was forced by storms to the coast of Norway. On hearing the crossing had been abandoned, James, sailed from Leith to meet Anne personally. The couple were married formally at the Bishop’s Palace in Oslo Norway on 23 November and, after stays at Elsinore and Copenhagen and a meeting with Tycho Brahe, returned. James turned to prosecuting witchcraft. Despite the fact that Scotland probably had about one quarter of the population of England, it had three times the number of witchcraft prosecutions, at an estimated 6,000 for the entire period. Large series of trials included those in 1590-91 and the Great Scottish Witch Hunt of 1597, which took place across Scotland from March to October. At least 400 people were put on trial for various forms of diabolism. The exact number of those executed is unknown, but is believed to be about 200.
