Cathan’s name survives in the various toponyms in the area containing the element Chattan (where the first consonant is lenited), such as Ardchattan (“Cathan’s Heights”) and Kilchattan (“Church of Cathan”), the hill of Suidhe Chattan and of the village of Kilchattan Bay, both on Bute, the Chattan Confederation, a coalition of Scottish clans. Lord James Stewart (c. 1531 – 23 January 1570) (Queen Mary’s half brother, son of James 5th, until 1562, Lord Abernethy, later 1st Earl of Moray) stayed at Paris, and met with many insults on account of his known attachment to the reformed religion: A box containing some valuable things was stolen from him; several persons were likewise hired to assassinate him in the street: he was apprized of his danger by an auld friend of his own, but not before he was almost involved in it, being instantly surrounded by a rabble, calling out Hugenot, hugenot, and throwing stones; he made his way through them on horseback. Soon after this he left Paris, and returned home in May 1561, with a commission from the queen, appointing him regent until her return. Biographia Scoticana Howie p. 66.

2014 54th Annual Colonial Highland Gathering
at Fair Hill Race Track, Fair Hill, Maryland. www .fairhillscottishgames. org/

Taken from the 40th annual commemorative program.

It began as “The Delaware Highland Gathering”, and now “The Colonial Highland Gathering”. But among the long-term loyalists, the event today is known simply as “The Games”…. and that’s what it is all about, really: the competitions for best athlete, best dancer, best drummer, best drum major, best piper, best pipe band.

The philosophy of these Games has always been that the competition is only as good as the judges. And, some impressive judges have participated over the years.

To King Malcolm Canmore (Malcolm of the Big Head), 1057-1093, goes the credit for popularizing the Sword Dance and also for organizing one of the first hill races. This latter event took place on the Braes of Mar when Malcolm had need of the services of a fast messenger. (In Scots vernacular a “brae” is a steep incline). He quickly organized a Gathering to find the most suitable person. This historic occasion has since been recognized as the Braemar Gathering. Gatherings are still held annually at Braemar and are usually attended by the British royal family. August 3, 1963.
