1566 David Rizzio, murdered by a conspiracy of Henry Stewart Lord Darnley, King, and Protestant nobles, led by Patrick Ruthven, 3rd Lord Ruthven,   in the Palace of Holyroodhouse, Edinburgh, Scotland. David Rizzio’s career was referred to by Henry IV of France. Mocking the pretension of James VI of Scotland to be the “Scottish Solomon”, Henry remarked that “he hoped he was not David the fiddler’s son”, alluding to the possibility that Rizzio, not Darnley, fathered King James. Rizzio is buried at Canongate Kirkyard, Edinburgh.

The Murder of David Rizzio Sir William Allan Exhibited 1833 (Royal Academy) For centuries, the dramatic life of Mary, Queen of Scots, has provided exciting subject matter for painters, writers and composers.  Sir William Allan depicts the March 1566 assassination of David Rizzio, the queen’s Italian secretary. Historically accurate, establishing the exact identity and role of all the individual conspirators and recreating  Mary’s rooms at the Palace of Holyrood. Allan based his Earl of Morton (with black hat to the far right) on a contemporary portrait, attributed to Arnold Bronckhorst, which is in the collection of the Scottish National Portrait Gallery. To the left, Mary is being restrained by her husband, Lord Darnley, who was part of the conspiracy but later denied any involvement. www.nationalgalleries.org

1868 Brigham Young to Donald GORDON of Inverness, dated 9 March 1868: “Dear Sir: The nature of the Territory of Utah is such that raising cattle, sheep, &c is far more profitable than depending upon hunting deer and other wild animals; in fact there is but little game here, and that is left for the natives to hunt.” Brigham further directed Gordon to contact British Mission President, Franklin D. 1987 some time in March. Troop 76 Cleveland Oklahoma. ‘There were only three Scouts, initially, in the Cleveland Branch of the Tulsa Oklahoma Stake. But that didn’t stop them. The branch was challenged to organize a Scout troop anyway.

“There were already other Scouts in the area,” reports Dan Steurer, first counselor in the branch presidency, who was given the specific assignment to organize the troop. “But troop committees weren’t really functioning. The community was looking for the leadership and organization that the Church could provide, and this was a way to serve them.” Strong adults, both LDS and non-LDS, were asked to work with the newly organized troop.

But the boys did their part too. “We recruited everybody to be in the troop,” said Brother Steurer’s son Rodney, 14. His brother Geoffrey, 13, and another Scout, Mark Choate, 15, (clans Semple, Douglas, MacPherson, Fraser, Livingston, Lindsay, Leslie, Campbell, Ruthven, Stewart) said that soon their friends Michael Bradfield and Neil Hammock were part of the troop, and of course they asked lots of questions about the Church.’ Start With Two.
