MARCH 31 1295 Robert de Brus, 5th  Lord of Annandale age 85, died. Robert was Lord of Hartlepool (or Hartness) in county Durham and Writtle and Hatfield Broadoak in Essex, England. His first wife 1) Isobel of Gloucester and Hertford (2 November 1226 – 10 July 1264) was the daughter of Gilbert de Clare, 5th  Earl of Hertford and 1st  Earl of Gloucester and Isabel Marshal, brought to him the village of Ripe, in Sussex, and his second wife 2) Christina de Ireby, the Lordship of Ireby in Cumberland.

Robert Bruce was Regent of Scotland some time during minority of his second cousin King Alexander III of Scotland (1241–1286) and was occasionally recognized as a Tanist of the Scottish throne. He was the closest surviving male relative to the king: Margaret of Huntingdon’s issue were all females up until birth of Hugh Balliol sometime in the 1260s.

  1. Paisley and the Gospel of Jesus Christ. Samuel Mulliner (b. 1809), and Alexander Wright (b. 1804), Scots, arrive as missionaries. [Ensign Feb. 1987]. With eight members by the end of March, Elders Wright and Mulliner conducted their first meetings at Paisley, in the home of a Sister Grace McMaster.

By the 19th  century, Paisley had established itself as a centre of the weaving industry, giving its name to the Paisley Shawl and the Paisley Pattern. The town’s associations with political Radicalism were highlighted by its involvement in the Radical War of 1820, with striking weavers being instrumental in the protests.

1850 John Caldwell Calhoun died (March 18, 1782 – March 31, 1850) Clan Colquhoun, was a leading American politician from South Carolina from 1810 to 1850. With a base among the Scots, Calhoun won his first election to Congress in 1810. Vice President, Secretary of War, Secretary of State,  Representative, Senator,  Democratic.

1895 John Jay McCloy (March 31, 1895 in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania – March 11, 1989 in Stamford, Connecticut) served as Assistant Secretary of War during World War II. President of the World Bank and U.S. High Commissioner for Germany. Together with Secretary of War Henry L. Stimson, McCloy was a staunch supporter of General Patton after the  “slapping incident” of 3 August 1943. Stimson and McCloy refused demands by loser Senators to recall Patton. As McCloy informed General Dwight D. Eisenhower, “Lincoln’s remark after they got after Grant comes to mind when I think of Patton – ‘I can’t spare this man, he fights.’

1911 Fleeta Stapleton Choate (nee Moritzky) born, LaHarpe Allen county Kansas (died 1976) Nurse. The town was named for Bernard de la Harpe or Jean-Baptiste Bénard de la Harpe (b. 4 Feb 1683, in Saint-Malo- d. 26 September 1765) was a French explorer who is credited with the discovery of Little Rock, Arkansas.  In 1910 LaHarpe Kansas had some of the largest zinc smelters in the world, two banks, an opera house, several good mercantile establishments, a newspaper, churches, and post office authorized for international money orders.

1971 Ewen Gordon McGregor was born in Perth, Scotland and brought up in Crieff His mother, Carol Diane (née Lawson), is a retired teacher of Crieff High School and latterly deputy head teacher of Kingspark School in Dundee. His father, James Charles Stewart “Jim” McGregor, is a retired physical education teacher and careers master of Morrison’s Academy, Crieff. He has an older brother, Colin (b. 1969), who is a former Tornado GR4 pilot in the Royal Air Force. He is the nephew of actor Denis Lawson (who also appeared in the Star Wars franchise, as Rebel Alliance pilot Wedge Antilles) and actress Sheila Gish and the step-cousin of actress Lou Gish on his mother’s side of the family. 2000 March 31 Using styrofoam and tile grout, Richard W. Featherstone, a former missionary in Scotland, duplicated the Allan stone “What e’er thou art, act well thy part” to original dimensions.

It was presented to Elder Haight at their annual reunion on March 31, 2000. [David McKay was from Caithness Scotland. His son, David O. McKay, became president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’.] The quote was an inspiration to President McKay. 2016 Utah is ranked 2nd highest (4.6% of the state population) among the 50 United States with the top percentages of Scottish residents (Wikipedia 26 March 2017 https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Scottish_Americans#Scottish_Americans_by_state ).   How are the Scots in Utah doing?
