MARCH 27 – 196 BC. Rosetta stone decree date is given as “4 Xandicus” in the Macedonian calendar and “18 Meshir” in the Egyptian calendar, which corresponds to March 27, 196 BC. In 1799 July 15 the Rosetta Stone is discovered in Egypt by Napoleon’s French army officers. By July 14, 1801 the British Navy defeated the French Navy, Thomas Lord Cochrane (clan Cochrane) being a Captain aboard the Speedy. The French Navy is unable to supply the French Army in Egypt. The French capitulate at Alexandria and give the stone to admiral Lord Keith, George Elphinstone, 1st Viscount Keith (clan Keith).

1457 Gilbert, 1st Lord Kennedy, created Lord between 17 march and 20 March 1458. Gilbert held the office of Keeper of the Castle of Lochdoun and the office of Constable of Stirling Castle, bestowed upon him in 1466.

1487 Pope Innocent VIII 27 March 1487 made William Schevez, Archbishop of St Andrews, ‘Primate of All Scotland’ which confirmed the place of St Andrews at the heart of the spiritual and temporal life of the kingdom of Scotland. Bishops and Archbishops of St Andrews acted as Chancellors of the University from 1413 to 1592 when the first noble Chancellor was appointed. Thereafter until the abolition of Episcopacy in 1689, there were five more Archbishops who acted as head of the University. The Bishopric of St Andrews was elevated into an Archbishopric by papal bull of Pope Sixtus IV when Patrick Graham was made the first Archbishop in 1472. It was the first time any Scottish bishopric had received metropolitan status and it was much resented by the other bishops of Scotland.

The seal is that of Archbishop John Hamilton (1547-1571).

1830 Scots Roman Type, prepared in Glasgow Scotland, and shipped to a foundry in Albany New York, then delivered to the E. B. Grandin Printing company in Palmyra New York, according to the Crandall Gutenberg Printing Museum in Provo Utah. The Scots Roman type is the font used to print the first edition of the Book of Mormon. The contract with E. B. Grandin’s print shop to print the book was signed on Tuesday 25 Aug 1829, and the completed book was on sale by Friday 26 March 1830. Typesetter John H. Gilbert selects type and inserts commas, periods, and other punctuation as Gilbert reads Oliver Cowdery’s hand written copy. One form signature of 16 pages, in quantities of 5,000 copies will be printed, 37 signatures per form per 11 hours per day, 6 days per week. 1836 Palm Sunday. At Goliad, Republic of Texas, Santa Anna, Mexican President and General murders his Texan Prisoners of War. Santa Ana ordered the execution of 400 volunteer Texas militia led by James Fannin, who had surrendered on March 20. Sam Houston, General of the Texas militia, and former Governor of Tennessee, whose second great grandfather had an estate in Scotland, learned of the Fannin disaster. Santa Anna wanted to send a message, that  the cruelty,  depravity, vengance, and danger under the Mexican President had no bounds.

1869 Locomotive. The first steam locomotive was built in 1804 by Richard Trevithick for the Penydarren Iron Works in Wales. English locomotives played a role in early American railroad history. U.S. railroads imported more than 100 English locomotives between 1829 and 1841.

1923 Lorenzo Elliott Semple III, born (died March 28, 2014) could trace his clan Semple direct line back to the Great Lord Semple in Scotland (Robert, 3rd Lord Semple 1505-1576) [fabpedigree.com]. American Screenwriter who created the Batman TV series, who knew it would be iconic?

While living in Spain in 1965, Semple was approached by producer William Dozier to develop a television series for ABC based on the comic book Batman. Semple wrote a pilot which was promptly picked up, and the series based on it put on the air, with popular success. Semple wrote the first four episodes. Semple also served as Executive Story Editor, a capacity in which he put his writing imprint on all of the first season’s scripts, and at the same time provided the screenplay for the 1966 Batman feature film version.
