Palmyra was originally an oasis settlement, called Tadmor, in the northern Syrian Desert. Although the Roman province of Syria was created in 64 B.C., Under the Roman emperor Tiberius (14–37 A.D.), Tadmor was incorporated into the province of Syria and assumed the name Palmyra, or “place of palms.” After the Roman annexation of Nabataea in 106 A.D., Palmyra replaced Petra as the leading Arab city in the Near East and its most important trading center. www.metmuseum.org/toah/hd/palm/

1898 March 26. SATURDAY. David McKay from Caithness Scotland reared a son, David O. McKay who became president of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints’ .  David O. McKay stood at the wall of Stirling Castle taking in the historic sites before him. Although McKay was not in the best of humor, describing his previous night as “gloomy” and his missionary companion, Peter Green Johnston, as not giving him time “to brood over anything,”1*McKay was nonetheless impressed by what he saw. He looked over the statue of King Robert the Bruce,

the Ladies’ Rock, the field of Bannockburn, the Public Green, Wallace’s Monument, and finally the sprawling valley where the River Forth and the ruins of the Abbey of Cambuskenneth lay.

McKay later recorded in his journal that these places “awaken an indescribable interest in and profound respect for the heroes and gallant chiefs of bonny Scotland!”2** McKay and his companion left Stirling Castle around five o’clock to return to their newly acquired lodgings at 9 Douglas Street in Stirling. The two missionaries were walking along Back O’ Hill Road below Gowan Hill when they approached a construction site for new apartments that would be known as the Albany Crescent, until its razing in 1965.  Journal [The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints] History 33_3_2007 {matt_richardson@byu.edu}

1937 Quality Street is an RKO 1937 comedy. It was directed by George Stevens and produced by Pandro S. Berman. The screenplay was by Allan Scott, Mortimer Offner and Jack Townley, based on the 1901 play by  ‘J. M. Barrie’. Sir James Matthew Barrie, 1st  Baronet, [clan Ogilvy, Barrie] OM (9 May 1860 – 19 June 1937) was a Scottish author and dramatist, who created Peter Pan, or The Boy Who Wouldn’t Grow Up, a “fairy play” about this ageless boy and an ordinary girl, Wendy, in  Neverland. His father David Barrie was a weaver. His mother was Margaret Ogilvy. In 1901 and 1902 he had back-to-back successes: Quality Street, about a responsible ‘old maid’ (30 years old) who poses as her own flirtatious niece to win the attention of a former suitor returned from the Napoleonic war; but he doesn’t buy into it.

Knight Grand Cross (GCB) The Most Honourable Order of the Bath (formerly the Most Honourable Military Order of the Bath)[1] is a British order of chivalry founded by George I on 18 May 1725.[2] The name derives from the elaborate medieval ceremony for creating a knight, which involved bathing (as a symbol of purification) as one of its elements. The knights so created were known as “Knights of the Bath”.[3] George I “erected the Knights of the Bath into a regular Military Order”.[4]

In 1946 Gow married Jane Emily Scott, and Gow and Scott are the maternal grandparents of Sophie Irene Hunter, whose husband Benedict Cumberbatch is the new Sherlock Holmes.

2013 CALLER: That would give the government a lot of power to impose very harsh penalties on churches. If you go back to the late 1800s where there was this big fight between [The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints] — who were practicing polygamy, that definition of marriage — and the federal government that had a monogamous definition of marriage, there was a bill passed called the Edmunds-Tucker Act. That law wound up stripping anyone who didn’t accept, like swear an oath to accept, the state’s definition of marriage, of rights.  If you didn’t do that, you did not have the right to vote. You did not have the right to serve in a public office. You did not have the right to serve as a juror. Wives could be compelled to testify against their husbands or be sent to jail if they didn’t. [The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints]  itself was dis-incorporated and its assets were seized. And, you know, this sets a legal precedent that could be turned around at Catholics, Baptists, [The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints] again, and every other church that holds to traditional marriage if you go and say that same-sex marriage is a right.
