Strategic Defense Initiative Organization, nicknamed Star Wars, bankrupted the Soviet Union and ended the Cold War, in 1989.Mid-90s [Limbaugh] attended a lecture given by Lady Margaret Thatcher at the Waldorf in New York. [Thatcher] made a point of saying it was Reagan, not Gorbachev, who brought down the Soviet Union primarily by proposing SDI. It was at that moment that Gorbachev knew it was over because he knew we Americans could do SDI and his country couldn’t.’  www.rushlimbaugh.com

‘Later, [Limbaugh] had the good fortune to become close friends with Lady Thatcher, and I often reminded her of that lecture and her point, and she “commanded me,” which is how she speaks. [Thatcher] commanded me to never allow people to think otherwise, never allow people to think that it was anyone other than Ronald Reagan and the spirit of America and its goodness and its faith in God that defeated the Soviet Union. [Limbaugh] remember I went to a dinner at a private home in Manhattan, I was asked to give the toast. It was a dinner in honor of Lady Thatcher. The guests were the usual Manhattan elites, many media people network presidents. After Lady Thatcher’s remarks when the hostess asked for questions, there were none. So I rose. I asked her, “Who won the Cold War?” [Thatcher] gave the same answer in her lecture to the dinner guests at this dinner. They sat in stone silence. They knew it. They didn’t want to hear it. I wish I had had a camera so you would know who. I’m not going to say who was at this dinner, but I wish you could have seen their faces when she said it.’

2014 Scotland’s Vikings go own way in independence vote. GULBERWICK, Scotland — In the late winter dusk, hundreds of Vikings are marching down to the beach, bearing flaming torches in a Viking fire festival known as Up Helly Aa whose name means roughly “the end of the holidays.”. There are only 23,000 Shetlanders, too few to make much difference to the outcome of the independence vote. But they have Viking-sized confidence, and a big bargaining chip: a chunk of Britain’s oil and gas reserves lie beneath Shetland waters. For centuries, Shetland was a poor place, ignored by governments far to the south and reliant on the unpredictable fishery industry and on making knitwear from sturdy local sheep. But the islands have prospered since large reserves of oil were discovered offshore in the 1960s. Construction of Sullom Voe, one of Europe’s largest oil and gas terminals, brought jobs and new migrants who reversed decades of population decline. Shetland was Viking-ruled until it was mortgaged to Scotland by the king of Norway in 1469 to raise a dowry for his daughter.

In this photo taken March 14, 2014, a man dressed as a Viking is silhouetted against a burning mock Viking ship as they take part in the annual Up Helly Aa, Viking fire festival in Gulberwick, Shetland Islands north of mainland Scotland. They live in Scotland’s remote Shetland Islands, a wind-whipped northern archipelago where many claim descent from Scandinavian raiders.
