1286 Alexander 3rd King of Scots, died in a fall from his horse in the dark while riding to visit the pregnant queen, Yolande de Dreux, at Kinghorn in Fife on 18 March 1286 for her birthday the next day. Alexander had spent the evening at Edinburgh Castle celebrating his second marriage and overseeing a meeting with royal advisors. Alexander 3rd was told the journey to Fife was hazardous because of weather conditions, but travelled anyway. Alexander became separated from his guides and in the dark his horse lost its footing. The 44-year auld king was found dead on the shore the following morning with a broken neck. (William 2nd also died in 1702 from a horse fall, so did Majorie Bruce March 2, 1316, as did William the Conqueror 9 Sept 1087, John Dunbar Earl of Moray during a joust in 1390)

Alexander III of Scotland Rescued from the Fury of a Stag by the Intrepidity of Colin Fitzgerald (‘The Death of the Stag’) below

Artist Benjamin West 1786. West’s heroic and monumental style illustrates a legend in which the first chieftain of the Clan Mackenzie saves the life of the Scottish King (Alexander 3rd). Colin Fitzgerald is shown about to spear a fierce stag who had turned on the Scottish King, Alexander III, during a hunting expedition. West includes other huntsmen, horses and dogs whose dynamic poses and striking gestures enhance the dramatic moment. Francis Humberston Mackenzie became chieftain of the Mackenzie Clan in 1783 and commissioned the painting to commemorate, rather conspicuously, his illustrious ancestor. www.nationalgalleries.org

Magnus replied stating that they, the English, would look towards Angus (clan Douglas), Argyle (clan Campbell) and Lennox (clan Stewart) should Duke of Albany (John Stewart, Regent and grandson of James 2nd, clan Stewart) return to Scotland. www.bolb.org.uk

1893 – Former Governor General Lord Stanley pledges to donate a silver challenge cup, later named after him, as an award for the best hockey team in Canada; originally presented to amateur champions, the Stanley Cup has been awarded to the top pro team since 1910, and since 1926, only to National Hockey League teams. Frederick Arthur Stanley, 16th Earl of Derby KG GCB GCVO PC (15 January 1841 – 14 June 1908), known as Frederick Stanley until 1886 and as Lord Stanley of Preston between 1886 and 1893.

The 1st Earl Derby’s 5th son was Sir Edward Stanley, 1st Lord Monteagle (1462–1524) prominent in the battle of Flodden Field. Popular ballads represent the English army as begging the Earl of Surrey to put Stanley in command of the van; Surrey, out of jealousy, placed Stanley in the rear, where nevertheless he distinguished himself, forcing the Scots to evacuate their position of vantage on the hill, and killing James IV of Scotland with his own hand (his name occurs in a line of Walter Scott’s Marmion: ‘Charge, Chester, charge—on, Stanley, on’). Thomas Ruthall, bishop of Durham, reported that Stanley behaved well, and recommended his elevation to the peerage for his services. On 8 May 1514 Stanley was installed Knight of the Garter. The 1st Earl Derby was also titular King of Mann, and Derby’s sister Elizabeth Stanley, who married Sir Richard Molyneux, was an ancestor of Molly Lenore Choate Summers and Garrett Scott Summers.
