303 Saint Vitus’ Day. Vitus was a Christian from Sicily who died as a martyr during persecutions of Dicletian and Maximian. His day was celebrated in the Catholic church in Scotland presumably until 1560. St. Vitus is the patron [Saint] of actors, dancer, comedians, and epileptics, protects against lightning strikes, animal attacks and oversleeping. Folklore of Scottish Lochs and Springs. Featured the kindling of fire, a precursor of bond fires before football games.

1215 Magna Charta. King John of England agreed to a document later known as the ‘Articles of the Barons’, to which his Great Seal was attached in the meadow at Runnymede on 15 June 1215. in “The Magna Charta Sureties’’ Wikipedia. Scots were hostages held in England as noted in paragraph 59.

‘’  (59) With regard to the return of the sisters and hostages of Alexander, king of Scotland, his liberties and his rights, we will treat him in the same way as our other barons of England, unless it appears from the charters that we hold from his father William, formerly king of Scotland, that he should be treated otherwise. According the National Society Magna Charta Dames and Barons, Roger de Montbegon (died 1226) abandoned the sureties and therefore Roger de Mowbray (younger brother of William de Mowbray, another surety) was substituted for him.

     Arbirlot (Gaelic: Obar Eilid) is a village in a rural parish of the same name in Angus, Scotland. The current name is a contraction of Aberelliot – mouth of the Elliot. Kelly Castle (sometimes Kellie Castle or Auchterlony Castle), which overlooks the Elliot Water, comprises a four-storey tower of the late 15th or early 16th Century, set within a 19th -century courtyard. Stronghold of the Mowbray family until forfeited to the Stewarts in the early 14th century and was restored from a semi-ruined state by the Earl of Dalhousie in the 19th century.

     Robert de Vere 3rd Earl of Oxford, Oct. 1214, Robert succeeded to his brother’s [Aubrey de Vere IV, 2nd earl of Oxford] title, estates, castles, and hereditary office of master chamberlain of England (later Lord Great Chamberlain). He swiftly joined the disaffected barons in opposition to King John; many among the rebels were his kinsmen. Oxford was elected one of the twenty-five barons who were to ensure the king’s adherence to the terms of Magna Carta, and as such was excommunicated by Pope Innocent III in 1215.

1389 Ottoman Sultan Murad I  defeated Lazar, Prince of Serbia   at the Battle of Kosovo Polje. Kosovo, Moravian Serbia Battle of Kosovo 1389, sixteenth-century Russian miniature. Date coincided with the feast of St. Vitus, so that Saint was adopted by the Serbs as their patron.

1498 Letter arrived. Pedro de Ayala made links across the diplomatic community. Ayala kept in touch with Raimondo de’ Raimondi by letter when he returned to Milan. Ayala advised Raimondo that diplomatic letters to James IV in Scotland from Milan should be copied to three other powerful Scots; the King’s brother, James, Archbishop of St Andrews; Robert Blackadder the Archbishop of Glasgow; and Ayala’s influential friend, the prothonotary, Andrew Forman. 1567 The confederated lords marched towards Dunbar, and Mary Stewart the Queen and Bothwell, having assembled an army, advanced to the encounter, and met them on Carberry hill, not far from the place where the battle of Pinkie was fought. (TG32-124) Clan Sempill were initially loyal to Mary, Queen of Scots, but later supported King James VI of Scotland and fought against Mary at the Battle of Carberry Hill. Wikipedia.

1768 – James Short, died, Scottish mathematician and optician (b. 1710 Edinburgh)

James Short’s reflecting telescope. In 1736 Queen Caroline requested Short to instruct her second son, William, in mathematics. In Mar 1737, he was elected a Fellow of the Royal Society and in 1758, a foreign member of the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences.

1787 Philadelphia Pennsylvania, United States of America. Under the Articles of Confederation, each state had equal representation in Congress, exercising one vote each. On 14 and 15 June 1787, a small-state caucus met to create the New Jersey Plan, the existing Continental Congress would remain, but it would be granted new powers, such as the power to levy taxes and force their collection. An executive branch was created, to be elected by Congress (the plan allowed for a multi-person executive). The executives would serve a single term and were subject to recall on the request of state governors. The plan created a judiciary that would serve for life, to be appointed by the executives. Any laws set by Congress would take precedence over state laws.

1849 June 15 James Knox Polk (Scots) (November 2, 1795 – June 15, 1849) 11th President, 1845-49: His ancestors were among the first Ulster-Scots settlers, emigrating from Coleraine in 1680 to become a powerful political family in Mecklenburg County, North Carolina. He moved to Tennessee and became its governor before winning the presidency.

On the same day [August 22, 23, 1877] these ordinances were performed, President Woodruff records in his journal that he baptized brother McAllister for Gen Washington & his forefathers and all the Presidents of the United States that were on my list. 1916 – U.S. President Woodrow Wilson signs a bill incorporating the Boy Scouts of America, making them the only American youth organization with a federal charter. Wilson’s grandparents were Rev. Dr. Thomas Woodrow, born in Paisley, Scotland and Marion Williamson from Glasgow.

British Gen. Sir Robert Baden-Powell founded the Boy Scouts organization in 1908. He had written a book on military reconnaissance and scouting which become so popular that he wrote Scouting for Boys in 1908. The U.S. organization, Boy Scouts of America, was founded in 1910 on Baden -Powell’s model

1994 June 6. 50th anniversary. American island-hopping tactics through the Central Pacific proceeded with an attack on the Marianas in the north. Here the U.S. objectives were Guam and Saipan. Following an air and sea pounding, Saipan was invaded by 20,000 U.S. Marines on June 15, 1944. Altogether, the Americans landed 125,000 troops, compared to the 32,000 Japanese on the island. By June 18, the Japanese forces were split in half. News of the disaster at Saipan moved Japanese strategists in Tokyo to order the destruction of the U.S. fleet supporting the Saipan assault. On June 19, 1944, a mobile Japanese task force moved to engage the U.S. ships between the Philippines and the Marianas. The result was the Battle of the Philippine Sea, the biggest carrier engagement of the war. U.S. submarines sank two Japanese carriers, torpedo aircraft accounted for another carrier, and U.S. planes destroyed more than 350 Japanese aircraft.

1966 Khartoum released. It stars Charlton Heston as General Gordon and Laurence Olivier as the Mahdi (Muhammad Ahmed) and is based on Gordon’s defense of the Sudanese city of Khartoum from the forces of the Mahdist army during the Siege of Khartoum.  original film poster by Frank McCarthy. On January 26, 1885, the city falls under a massive assault. Lieutenant Colonel Mark Choate (clan Gordon) returns to Khartoum, Sudan, in 2016 as the Senior Defense Attache for the United States Army.

1969 “Paperinik il diabolico vendicatore” (“Paperinik the Diabolical Avenger”) published on June 8 and June 15, 1969.
