Despite this secrecy, an English commander at Berwick, Sir James Croft was aware of the plan. Although Elizabeth (recently crowned Tudor Queen of England) was personally sympathetic to the earl’s plight, for English policy, the rescue was a step towards the objective of ending the Auld Alliance, (of Scotland and France) knowing that on Arran’s return his father, James Hamilton, Duke of Châtellerault and 2nd Earl of Arran, as ‘second person’ of the realm would become leader of the Lords of the Congregation. Chatellerault was 2nd in line for the throne, from about 1554 until June 1566, if Mary Stewart, Queen of Scots, died childless. The 3rd Earl’s younger brother, Lord David Hamilton, was not so fortunate. David, aged 15, was imprisoned in the Château de Vincennes and transferred in March 1560 to the Château d’Amboise wrapped in a blanket. Map of Scotland circa 1402 showing the border region of Northern England and South Scotland, as it may have been by the mid 1500s. The 3rd Earl of Arran would have traveled up the east coast route through Berwick upon Tweed, on the North Sea, probably from Durham. (The Durham, NewCastle, Berwick, Edinburgh route was followed by Margaret Tudor, Queen of Scots, in 1503, when she traveled to marry James 4th King of Scots.)

1696 The Darien colony, between the Americas. Sometime in June. This new species of rivalry on the part of an old enemy, was both irritating and alarming. The English had hitherto thought of the Scots as a poor and fierce nation, who, in spite of fewer numbers and far inferior resources, was always ready to engage in war with her powerful neighbor; and now that these wars were over, it was embarrassing and provoking to find the same nation display, in spite of its proverbial caution, a hardy and ambitious spirit of emulating them in the paths of commerce. Map of central America circa 1748, showing the Darien location between continents.

1772 Duncan McArthur (June 14, 1772 – April 29, 1839), of Scots descent, was a Federalist and National Republican politician from Ohio. He served as the 11th Governor of Ohio. He was a Brigadier General U.S. Army and commanded a brigade under William H. Harrison during the battle of the Thames also known as Battle of Moraviantown, a decisive United States victory in the War of 1812 against Great Britain. It took place on October 5, 1813, near present-day Chatham, Ontario in Upper Canada. It resulted in the death of the Shawnee chief Tecumseh. Shortly thereafter he was placed in charge of the Army of the Northwest following Harrison’s resignation.

1916 Flag day. Woodrow Wilson (Scots ancestry) presidential proclamation. Act of Congress for flag day in 1949. 1777 Second Continental Congress adopted the stars and stripes flag.  ”More than two centuries ago, on June 14, 1777, the Second Continental Congress formally adopted the Stars and Stripes as the official flag of our new Republic.  Through the many triumphs and trials of our Nation, our flag has reflected our heritage of liberty and embodied the American virtues of bravery, justice, and loyalty.  Each year, we celebrate Flag Day and National Flag Week to honor our timeless national emblem. Our flag symbolizes our solemn pride and eternal gratitude to our service members, who willingly raise their hand in front of our Nation’s colors and take an oath to support and defend the Constitution of the United States.  Our flag also serves as a final acknowledgement of our country’s gratitude to the families of those soldiers, sailors, airmen, marines, and coastguardsmen who have given their last full measure of devotion to our country.  After the echo of the last rifle volley and the final notes of “Taps” fade away, the flag is carefully folded and presented to the grieving families of our fallen heroes to serve as a source of comfort and strength in times of immense sorrow.  Our majestic flag flies during our country’s most memorable occasions.  In the early morning of May 10 of this year, a large American flag undulated in the breeze over the homecoming of three Americans released from captivity in North Korea.  It also presided during our astronauts’ many missions exploring the moon’s surface, the heroic triumph of the Marines at the battle of Iwo Jima, and the recovery operations at New York City’s ground zero and the Pentagon immediately following the attacks of September 11, 2001.  Our country’s colors — bold and brilliant — symbolize to the world those values we hold sacred, freedom and liberty, and our hope for a better world.  Today, [June 8, 2018] we celebrate the ideals of our country’s founding, which are represented so proudly by the broad stripes and bright stars — that all men are created equal and endowed by their Creator with unalienable rights, including life, liberty, and the pursuit of happiness.  May we never forget the tremendous sacrifices required to secure and maintain our freedom.  Let us proudly stand and remember our founding principles and our country’s ever continuing march to achieve a more perfect Union.  As we raise our flag, let us resolve always to cherish it with reverence and eternal gratitude so that the red, white, and blue may forever wave from sea to shining sea.  NOW, THEREFORE, I, DONALD J. TRUMP, President of the United States of America, do hereby proclaim June 14, 2018, as Flag Day, and the week starting June 10, 2018, as National Flag Week.  I direct the appropriate officials to display the flag on all Federal Government buildings during this week, and I urge all Americans to observe Flag Day and National Flag Week by displaying the flag.  I also encourage the people of the United States to observe with pride and all due ceremony those days from Flag Day through Independence Day, set aside by the Congress (89 Stat. 211), as a time to honor America, to celebrate our heritage in public gatherings and activities, and to publicly recite the Pledge of Allegiance to the Flag of the United States of America. IN WITNESS WHEREOF, I have hereunto set my hand this eighth day of June, in the year of our Lord two thousand eighteen, and of the Independence of the United States of America the two hundred and forty-second.  DONALD J. TRUMP”

In 2006, Donald Trump bought the Menie estate on the coast north of Aberdeen, Scotland  to create the best golf course in the world. The project includes plans for a hotel, holiday homes, housing and two golf courses. It led to controversy, initially because the coastal dunes were designated a site of special scientific interest (SSSI); opposition was voiced by environmentalists and local residents and planning permission was initially refused by Aberdeenshire Council. In 2008 the local authority was overruled by the Scottish government, First Minister Alex Salmond citing economic benefits Trump had promised as justifying the unusual step of permitting development on an SSSI. Mary MacLeod Trump’s maternal line was also well established in Tong, her mother, Mary, being born there in 1867 to Donald Smith and Mary Macaulay Smith. They had been married in Garrabost, also in the parish of Stornoway, in 1858. At that time Donald Smith was said to have been a fisherman and the son of Duncan Smith and Henrietta MacQueen Smith. scottishroots.com/donald.html (clans MacQueen, Macaulay, MacLeod, of Aberdeenshire and Outer Hebrides) Donald Trump with Piper. celticlifeintl.com/donald-trump/
