1524 sometime in, Chief Sir Alexander Jardine of Applegirth led the Clan Jardine when they met an advancing force of English near Carlisle in 1524 where they took hundreds of English prisoners during the Anglo-Scottish Wars.

1694 – Charles Gerard, 1^st  Earl of Macclesfield, English general (b. c.1618) died. The eldest son of Sir Charles Gerard, he was a member of an auld Lancashire family, his great-grandfather having been Sir Gilbert Gerard (died 1593) of Ince, in that county, one of the most distinguished judges in the reign of Elizabeth I. His mother was Penelope Fitton of Gawsworth Hall, Cheshire.

1746 George Keith Elphinstone, 1^st  Viscount Keith (7 January 1746 – 10 March 1823) was a British admiral active throughout the Napoleonic Wars.  Took the Rosetta Stone from the French at Alexandria 30 August 1801. In Patrick O’Brian’s Aubrey-Maturin series Lord Keith and his wife ‘Queeney’ appear in several of the best-selling novels.

  George Keith Elphinstone, 1^st  Viscount Keith. With a naval brigade at the occupation of Charleston, South Carolina, after the siege from March 29 – May 12, 1780. The British retained control of the city until December 1782.

1751 did not occur in England, Ireland, British North America, and British colonies, as 1751 only had 282 days due to the Calendar Act of 1750. 1751 ran from March 25^th 1751 (Lady Day) to December 31^st 1751, the next date being January 1^st, 1752.  But this date in 1751 did occur in Scotland and most European countries.

1800 Millard Fillmore, (January 7, 1800 – March 8, 1874) 13th American president.

1840 Samuel Mulliner, who had learned the trade of shoemaking in Dunbar, Journeyed to Edinburgh, where Mulliner’s parents lived. Wright continued on to the north to spend time with his relatives. Mulliner remained in the area of Edinburgh until 7 January 1840, when he launched his plan to systematically proselytize from one end of the country to the other. He began his missionary labors in Bishopton, six miles west of Paisley. In this area he taught Alexander and Jessie Hay, whom he baptized in the icy water of the River Clyde a week later. 1883 Admiral of the Fleet Andrew Browne Cunningham, 1st Viscount Cunningham of Hyndhope KT, GCB, OM, DSO and two Bars (7 January 1883 – 12 June 1963), was a British admiral of the Second World War.
