January 31 Scots Book of Days
January 31 – 1504 Treaty of Lyon was signed on January 31, 1504 between Louis XII of France and Ferdinand II of Aragon. Based on the terms of the treaty, France ceded Naples to Spain. Moreover, France and Spain defined their respective control of Italian territories. France controlled northern Italy from Milan and Spain controlled Sicily and southern Italy. France was Scotland’s Auld alliance.

1566 King of Scots Lord Darnley Stewart, to Edinburghs Kirk o’ Field, TG 31-117. Won’t go well for the King.
1599 never happened in Scotland. Previously the year went from March 25 to March 24. So March 25, 1599 was the New Year, and after December 31, 1599, began January 1, 1600, by order of the King.
1746 [Scotland’s calendar.] On the 31st Lord George Murray retired on Bannockbum.
1751 did not occur in England, Ireland, British North America, and British colonies, as 1751 only had 282 days due to the Calendar Act of 1750. As a result of the Act, Scotland adopted the Gregorian calendar in 1752. After the twelfth skipped Julian leap day in 1800, it was changed to 6 April, which still corresponded to 25 March Old Style. However it was not changed when a thirteenth Julian leap day was skipped in 1900, so the tax year in the United Kingdom still begins on 6 April.
1902 Tallulah Bankhead, (January 31, 1902 – December 12, 1968) was an American actress. Theater Scotch Mist (January 26, 1926) (London).
1913 James Ludovic Lindsay, 26th Earl of Crawford 9th Earl of Balcarres (1847 – 31 January 1913) died, and was a British astronomer. Upon hearing of a threat to close down the Edinburgh Royal Observatory, in 1888 Crawford made a donation of astronomical instruments and his books on mathematics and the physical sciences from the Bibliotheca Lindesiana in order that a new observatory could be founded. Thanks to this donation, the new Royal Observatory, Edinburgh was opened on Blackford Hill in 1896. Along with his father, he built up a private observatory at Dun Echt, Aberdeenshire. He employed David Gill (astronomer) to equip the observatory, using the best available technology. Among his achievements, Gill later made the first photograph of the Great Comet of 1882, pioneering astrophotography and the mapping of the heavens.

Caricature of James Lindsay by Leslie Ward. Crawford’s observatory included an extensive collection of rare books, part of the Bibliotheca Lindesiana at Haigh Hall, Rare does not describe the collection as it implies a number of copies worldwide. Lindsay collected unique books, from the 16th centuries or before, when the printing press was limited (only one in all of Scotland from about 1507), and the output might be but two separate editions of books a year, until after the Civil war, in the middle of the 17th century. See the Armorial of Sir David Lyndsay of the Mount Secundus.

1943 German aircraft, E-boats and mines continued to threaten shipping around the coasts of Britain, but few ships were now being lost due to the combined effort of the RAF fighters, convoy escorts and minesweepers.
