January 20 – 288 circa Saint Sebastian (died c. 288) was an early Christian saint and martyr. Saint of bubonic plague fearful.  For centuries , until 1560, the Scots celebrated all Saints’ days.

1465 Thomas, Earl of Arran, was contracted, 20 January 1465, to Marion, youngest daughter of Gilbert, 1st Lord Kennedy but this marriage does not appear to have taken place.

 

1599 never happened in Scotland.  Previously years went from March 25 to March 24, aligned with the Spring equinox (day and night equal around the globe).  January 1 was the year 1600 per King James Sixth decree.

1613 Charles IX of Sweden started the Kalmar War prudently concluded by Charles’ son, Gustavus Adolphus, in the second year of his reign, by the Treaty of Knäred, January 20, 1613 imposed onerous pecuniary obligations upon Sweden by Denmark.of Scandinavia which dated back to the bluidy days of Christian 2nd of Denmark.

 

The Kalmar War (1611–1613) was a war between Denmark–Norway and Sweden. Both sides used mercenaries, the Swedes using Scottish mercenary forces.

1649 (Edinburgh years) 1648 (London years) trial of Charles I of England by the High Court of Justice begins

1746 [Scotland’s Calendar]. The Prince at Bannockburn prosecuting the siege of Stirling Castle.

1751 did not occur in England, Ireland, British North America, and British colonies, as 1751 only had 282 days due to the Calendar Act of 1750. 1751 ran from March 25th 1751 (Lady Day) to December 31st 1751, the next date being January 1st, 1752. But this date in 1751 did occur in Scotland and most European countries.

 

1783 – The Kingdom of Great Britain signs a peace treaty with France and Spain, officially ending hostilities in the American War of Independence. The treaty includes fishing on the banks of Newfoundland and Gulf of St Lawrence. Great Britain restores to France St Lucia, Goree and Senegal, and Pondicherry, and Dunkirk. France gives up all West India except Tobago. Spain keeps West Florida. Tytler’s Britannica.

1920 Dr. Colonel Edwin Eugene Aldrin, Junior born. ‘Buzz’ Aldrin. One of two Scots to be first on the moon. Buzz Aldrin was born in Montclair, New Jersey on January 20, 1930.  His mother, Marion Moon, was the daughter of an Army Chaplain.  His father, Edwin Eugene Aldrin, was a Colonel in the Air Force, a Sc.D. from the Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT), and an aviation pioneer.

Buzz was educated at the US Military Academy at West Point, graduating third in his class with a B.S. in mechanical engineering. He then joined the Air Force where he flew F86 Sabre Jets in 66 combat missions in Korea, shot down two MIG-15′s, and was decorated with the Distinguished Flying Cross.  After a tour of duty in Germany flying F100’s, he went on to earn his Doctorate of Science in Astronautics at MIT and wrote his thesis on Manned Orbital Rendezvous.
