Insecure IDs Compromise Security at Military Bases

“The gist of the article is that U.S. military posts have begun to tighten up on the identity documents required before they will permit entry onto their compounds. It is a commonsense security measure given today’s unsettled world, and particularly noteworthy in light of efforts by so many terrorist groups to single out serving members of our armed forces and police. For instance, in 2015 ISIS released a list of 100 U.S. armed forces members’ names, addresses, and other data, obviously with the hope that would-be jihadists would follow up with attacks against them here in the homeland.”

Will Trump Restore ‘Wet Foot-Dry Foot’ for Cubans?

Spoiler: Probably not. “As President Obama just said at his press conference, our Cuba-specific immigration policy was an anachronism. The angry commentary in the wake of Obama’s announcement (see here, for just one example) is obviously correct that Cuba is still a dictatorship. But the Soviet Empire of which it was once a part has been gone for a quarter-century, and Cuba is now just another decrepit Third World country ruled by gangsters, no different from Zimbabwe or Laos or Turkmenistan or Russia. People from those countries do not, and should not, have automatic, unlimited access to the United States, and neither should Cubans.”

House GOP, Trump At Odds Over Border Adjustment Proposal

“Proponents of border tax adjustment, which would tax imports while exempting exports, argue it makes the United States more competitive in the world marketplace while incentivizing companies to produce their goods domestically. The provision, which is a key element in the GOP’s “A Better Way” proposal on corporate tax reform, would generate $1.1 trillion in revenues over the course of a decade, according to the Tax Foundation.

According to Trump – who ran on the promise to keep manufacturing jobs in the U.S. – the House proposal is “too complicated.” “Anytime I hear border adjustment, I don’t love it,” he told The Wall Street Journal. “Because usually it means we’re going to get adjusted into a bad deal. That’s what happens.””

Obama Ends Visa-free Path for Cubans Who Make It to US Soil

““By taking this step, we are treating Cuban migrants the same way we treat migrants from other countries,” he said. “We will continue to welcome Cubans as we welcome immigrants from other nations, consistent with our laws.”

Obama said the Department of Homeland Security also is ending the Cuban Medical Professional Parole Program, which allowed Cuban doctors and medical professionals working in a third-world country to enter the U.S. Obama said they may now apply for asylum at U.S. embassies the same way any foreign national would”

LETTER TO THE EDITOR: Paul Ryan’s immigration betrayal

” He’s a traitor to his party and to all the Democrats and Republicans who voted for Donald Trump. He’s put the wishes of his donors above those of 95 million unemployed Americans who can’t find employment because of illegal competition for American jobs. He wants us to believe that those who disrespect our borders, break our laws, abstain from our taxes, assault our citizens and encumber our medical and education systems have more of a right to our jobs than Americans do.”

More Mexicans are crossing the border — to leave the US. Here’s one family’s story.

“Not only did fewer Mexicans come to this country, many Mexicans went home. Between 2009 and 2014, slightly more than one million Mexicans and their US-born children left the US for Mexico.

That number exceeded the number of Mexican immigrants who arrived in America in the same period, according to the Pew report. The population of Mexican-born people in the US also began to decline. Many of the Mexican immigrants who remained weren’t new arrivals, but long-term residents with children.”

Illegal Mexican Alien Arrested for Child Sexual Assault

“”Javier-Jimenez was determined to be a citizen and national of Mexico, present in the United States illegally. An immigration detainer was placed with the Surry County Jail in order to hold him for [Immigration and Customs Enforcement] upon his release from local custody,” an official press release said.”

Muriel Bowser says D.C. will still shield illegal immigrants

“The District will continue to be a sanctuary city for illegal immigrants and will tend to its most vulnerable residents if Congress repeals the Affordable Care Act, Miss Bowser said during a panel discussion on big-city progressive priorities.

“We didn’t change,” Miss Bowser said at the Center for American Progress event. “There’s going to be a new occupant at the White House, but D.C. residents didn’t change.””

Immigration Court Backlog Under Obama Reaches Record-Breaking High

“U.S. immigration courts reached a record backlog of 533,909 cases at the end of 2016, flooding America with illegal aliens and overrunning the court system.

That “crushing workload,” up 4.2 percent in the last four months of 2016 alone, has more than doubled since Obama took office in 2009 when the backlog was 223,809 pending cases, according to Syracuse University’s Transactional Records Access Clearinghouse (TRAC).”

Man Who Got Life For Raping 10 Year Old Was An Illegal Immigrant

“Rony Otoniel Mendez, 26, was convicted of repeatedly raping the 10-year-old girl in her Florida home, and is on his way to prison to serve a life sentence without parole. The girl got pregnant from one of the assaults and gave birth to his daughter in 2015.

Mendez was an illegal immigrant when he assaulted the girl beginning in October 2013, a spokeswoman for the Polk County Sheriff’s office told TheDCNF. He fled the country after the girl learned she was pregnant and pressed charges, reports the Ledger. But federal officials tracked him down in Guatemala and extradited him to the U.S. to stand trial.”

Wage-Based Selection of H-1B Visas Could Cut Out the Lowest-Paid Positions

“Changing the system would then create winners and losers. Such a wage system creates greater certainty for employers paying the average wage or higher. The Level 3 wage corresponds to the median wage. If you make a visa petition where the alien is to be paid at or above average, you can be pretty certain that you are going to get your visa. The randomness of the past will be gone for such employers.”

When Is an Alien Admitted?

“Imagine this scenario: An alien goes through immigration processing, has his passport and tourist visa scrutinized, answers a question or two, has the entry document stamped “admitted”, and passes on to international baggage claim and customs inspection. There, for whatever reason, the inspecting officers decide to open his luggage and find inside a letter from a relative, or a job contract, or some other incontrovertible evidence that the alien has absolutely no intention of abiding by the terms of his tourist visa. He is escorted back upstairs to secondary immigration inspection with the evidence now literally in hand. ”

Toothless H-1B Bill Is Back

“This illustrates the problem. It is not an accident that Americans are being replaced by cheap foreign workers. This process is taking place because of deliberate, affirmative actions made by Congress. The folks who write bills like this are not working for America or Americans; the work for the big-money donors. Rep. Issa has demonstrated the lengths some members will go to ensure that this abomination continues.”

Is DHS Sending a Coded Message in the Proposed New EB-5 Regulations?

“The EB-5 or immigrant investor program offers a family-sized set of green cards (ultimately) to alien investors who place $500,000 in investment pools authorized by, but not guaranteed by, DHS. These investments are supposed to be made in depressed areas, defined as having 150 percent of the nation’s unemployment rate. The program allows for the definition of targeted employment areas (TEAs) by, in effect, the promoters of what usually are urban real estate deals.”

IRS Should Say Immediately: Only Genuine SSNs Produce Refunds

“The agency, particularly under the Obama administration, has resolutely refused to take steps that would prevent making needless payments to illegal immigrants. These decisions have routinely not involved Congress, and sometimes have not risen to the assistant commissioner level, so a simple order by the newly appointed Secretary of the Treasury, or by the new IRS commissioner (who has not yet been named) could literally save billions in these payments.”

Interesting Migrant Screening Suggestion from an Unlikely Source

“Someone (in this case from China) who shows up with a tourist visa and six pieces of luggage is likely a would-be illegal worker, planning on a long stay in the United States. A similar alien, traveling with one or two pieces of luggage, is more likely to be a genuine tourist. So: why not screen tourists on the basis of their luggage, as the island pol suggested?”
