These discussions commemorate the passing of Professor Stephen William Hawking, age 76, on ‘pi day’ 2018, late of Cambridge, England. They are extracts of a letter sent in 2003 to the Professor reviewing portions of his book, A Brief History of Time.

Professor Hawking,

     You observed (page 5) that in an infinite universe, every point would be a center, since the universe would extend equall in all directions. You make additional points on the significance of a finite versus infinite universe. The Universe is infinite, as I extrapolate from the expressions in this poem,

by William W. Phelps, which is also a Hymn to be sung:

“If you could hie to Kolob, in the twinkling of an eye,

and then continue onward with that same speed to fly,

D’ye think that you could ever, through all eternity,

find out the generations Where Gods began to be?

Or see the grand beginning where space did not extend?

Or view the last creation, where Gods and matter end?

Me thinks the Spirit whispers, “No man has found ‘pure space,”

Nor seen the outside curtains, where nothing has a place.

The works of God continue, and worlds and lives abound;

You observe (page 175) an interest to know the mind of God. A like question was asked before. “And I said: Lord, how is it done?” (Enos at verse 7), circa 540 B.C. He has told us. He tells

     Much wisdom has to be repeated, because much was not written or has been lost. “And there are also many other things which Jesus did, the which, if they should be written every one, I suppose that even the world itself could not contain the books that should be written. Amen.” The Gospel according to Saint John, chapter 21, verse 25.

“And he went forth, and beheld that the words of the Lord had all been fulfilled; and he finished his record; (and the hundredth part I have not written) and he hid them in a manner that the people of Limhi did find them.” Book of Ether, Circa 122 B.C.

Sacred scripture that we know existed, because of references in the Bible, and which are now unavailable include the books of: the Covenant (Ex. 24:7), the wars of the Lord (Num. 21:14), Jasher (Joshua 10:13, 2 Samuel 1:18), Acts of Solomon (1 Kings 11:41), Samuel the seer (1 Chr 29:29), Nathan (2 Chr 9:29), Shemaiah (2 Chr 12:15), acts of Abijah in the story of the prophet Iddo (2 Chr 13:22), Jehu (2 Chr 20:34), sayings of the seers (2 Chr 33:19). Also, Paul refers to his epistles fromLaodicea (Col. 4:6). Also, Jude refers to his epistle on salvation (Jude 1:3).

Energy equals Mass times the speed of light times the speed of light, or Energy equals Mass times the speed of light squared

This is the only equation you give. Energy equals mass times the square of the speed of light, or speed times speed. Since the speed of light is slightly under 3*10^8 Meters per second, the square is under 9*10^16 Meters squared per seconds squared. I know what a meter*meter is, (or meters squared), which is defined as area. But I do not know what second*second or “seconds squared” are. Measuring Mass in kilograms, the equation is restated as

{Energy equals Mass (kilograms) * 3*10^16 meter*meter / second * second}. Energy becomes proportional to area and mass and time squared.

As I recall, gravitational acceleration is defined as meters per second per second, but I don’t understand meters per second per second to mean meters squared per seconds squared. And since light’s speed is constant among all observers in uniform motion, there is no acceleration of light anyway. This lack of comprehension may be because my perspective of time is linear.

Perhaps an attribute of Godhood is to view time in multiple dimensions, time, time squared, time cubed, time quadrupled, time quintupled, &c.

An insight to God’s knowledge of time may be in the admonition concerning preparation for the “second coming” of Christ. Matthew 24:36 states

“But of that day and hour knoweth no man, no,     not the angels of heaven, but my Father         only.”

and in Joseph Smith’s Matthew 24 extract that is elaborated to read at verse 40:

“But of that day, and hour no one knoweth;   no, not the angels of God in heaven, but my Father only.”

Perhaps a way to distinguish and separate angelhood from Godhood is the knowledge and wisdom to control and know time.

     You mention that as an object’s speed approaches the speed of light, time appears to slow, or does slow down. This you and others have called time dilation. You don’t give the formula for this, but I obtained it from the Teaching company. In the spirit of not burdening this letter with mathematic formulas, I leave the calculations in a Post Script. But here is a proposal. If the math formula for time dilation proves or concurs with the proposition that as object’s speed up, time slows, then considerthis possibility. There is a biological system called the Banyan (or Banian) Indian fig tree, which extends its branches, from which branches reach the ground, growing more roots underground and extending more trees, branches, and roots, each supporting the other along the surface the ground, until a single biological system which occupies many dozens of acres, the size of which is limited only by water, land and sunshine. Also, consider Australia’s great barrier reef of coral which is 1500 miles long, as a single biological system. Now imagine an earth warm enough so a banyan tree or coral reef could extend from the North pole to the equator, a distance of about 8,000 miles. As the equator is rotating at about 1,000 miles per hour, and the pole is not moving at all, or only inches a day, shouldn’t time be behind at the equator? If the earth is millions or billions of years old, shouldn’t it be yesterday at the equator? And it is! Using the time dilation formula, the equator time loses one second every 32 earth years and 2 earth months. Equator time loses a day every 2.78298 *10^6 ear years (every 2.8 million earth years). Equator time loses a month every 8.3462400 *10^7 earth years (every 83 million earth years). Equator time loses an earth year every 10.015488 *10^8 earth years (every 1 billion and one million earth years). Or if the universe is 25 billion earth years old, and had the earth been around that long, the earth’s equator is 25 years slower or younger than the pole. This is based on the calculation that the equator has traveled farther than the pole, 25,000 miles in a day, 9.125 million miles in a year. The equator must travel 24.624 *10^6*10^6 (or million million earth miles) to lose a day (taking about 2.7 *10^6 earth years to so travel). The equator travels 293.825 million earth miles in 32.3 earth years to lose a second.

The equator travels 738.72 million million (or trillion) miles to lose an earth month. The equator travels 8.8644 quintillion (a million trillion) miles to lose an earth year. So, perhaps we could have a single biological system wherein one part was seconds, minutes, hours, days, months, or years younger than another part, or the other part was that much older.

This is not to show the theory of time dilation as correct or incorrect. It is to have some fun. The Lord told Abraham that the slower moving bodies are above faster moving bodies. Whatever “above” means. Or, because the faster bodies are younger, always behind in time, the slower bodies are older and ahead in time, and the younger ones cannot catch up by speeding up, but counter-intuitively can catch up with the slower bodies, only by slowing down. Is it possible for a body to slow down more than another body so that the first makes up for lost time, so to speak? And is it lost time? Can time be lost? It can be wasted, but can it be lost?

Another way to view time, from a Godhood viewpoint, may be like electro magnetic radiation in which 150 radio stations operate in the New York City radio market, with another 20 TV stations, and thousands of CB radios, and hundreds of thousands of cell phones, and fire and police radios, micro waves, two ways, all operating in the same space and time, usually without interference, because of different frequencies. Maybe time operates on something equivalent to frequencies so past, present,and future can be one Now to a God. Perhaps that is what makes a God, God, plus the ability to create and command celestial bodies, and organize three billion genome combinations to form man’s body.

Professor Hawking’s mother was Scottish. His grandfather was James Walker born Glasgow and son of Archibald Walker Jr. and Janet Audrey Margaret Morris. Archibald was the son of Archibald Walker Sr. and Isobel McIntyre Ewing. Janet was the daughter of William John Morris and Margaret McGregor. Hawking’s mother’s mother was Elisabeth Agnes “Nancy” Stevenson Law, born Glasgow, and daughter of Andrew Law and Agnes Stevenson. Agnes was the daughter of Robert Stevenson who was married 6 August 1852 in Melrose, Roxburgh, Scotland to Isabella Hyslop.
