 MacLellan Crest: A naked arm supporting on the point of a sword, a moor’s head. Motto: THINK ON. Lord Kirkcudbright’s crest alludes to the tradition that a MacLellan killed an Irish bandit which had terrorised the lands around Kirkcudbright. The king offered anyone who brought the bandit in, dead or alive, the barony of Bomby. When the king appeared to forget his promise, MacLellan supposedly exclaimed “Think on!”. 1617 Treaty of Stolbovo on February 27, 1617 the tsar surrendered to the Swedish king the provinces of County of Kexholm and Ingria, including the fortress of Nöteborg (later Schlusselburg), the key to Finland. Russia, furthermore, renounced all claims upon Estonia and Livonia, and paid a war indemnity of 20,000 roubles. In return for these concessions, Gustavus restored Novgorod and acknowledged Michael Romanov as tsar of Russia. 1735 John Arbuthnot’s parents were Margaret Lammie and Alexander Arbuthnott. Born April 1667 in Inverbervie, Kincardine, Scotland.
Died 27 Feb 1735 in London, England. Arbuthnot entered Marischal College, Aberdeen, in 1681. The family were Jacobite supporters, meaning they supported the right of the Roman Catholic James II to be King of England and Scotland. In 1689 Viscount Dundee, known as “Bonnie Dundee”, led an uprising in support of James. Robert Arbuthnot, who like his brother John was a graduate of Marischal College,

Arbuthnot joined Bonnie Dundee’s army and fought against General Hugh Mackay at the Battle of Killiecrankie. Dundee’s forces were completely victorious, but he was killed. In August the Scottish resistance was crushed at the Battle of Dunkeld and Robert Arbuthnot fled to France. With Alexander Pope, Jonathan Swift, John Gay and Thomas Parnell he founded the Scriblerus Club in 1713, whose purpose was to satirise bad poetry and pedantry

1751 did not occur in England, Ireland, British North America, and British colonies, as 1751 only had 282 days due to the Calendar Act of 1750. But 1751 did occur in Scotland, as 1751 had 365 days. The world’s oldest lunar “calendar” is in an Aberdeenshire field. Dr Richard Bates, of the University of St Andrews, said the discovery provided “exciting new evidence” of the early Mesolithic Scotland. He added: “This is the earliest example of such a structure and there is no known comparable site in Britain or Europe for several thousands of years after the monument at Warren Field was constructed.”

1812 – Poet Lord Byron gives his first address as a member of the House of Lords, in defense of Luddite violence against Industrialism in his home county of Nottinghamshire. George Gordon Byron, 6th   Baron Byron, later George Gordon Noel, 6th Baron Byron, FRS (22 January 1788 – 19 April 1824), commonly known simply as Lord Byron, Byron’s mother was the former Catherine Gordon (d. 1811), a descendant of Cardinal Beaton and heiress of the Gight estate in Aberdeenshire, Scotland. His maternal grandfather, was George Gordon of Gight, a descendant of James I of Scotland, Byron himself used this surname for a time and was registered at school in Aberdeen as “George Byron Gordon”. At the age of 10, he inherited the English Barony of Byron of Rochdale, becoming “Lord Byron”, and eventually dropped the double surname (though after this point his surname was secondary to his peerage).

1869 Dr. Alice Hamilton (February 27, 1869, New York City – September 22, 1970) was the first woman appointed to the faculty of Harvard University and was a leading expert in the field of occupational health.

 1995 July 11. In 1915, she was a delegate to the International Congress of Women at the Hague, which tried and failed to prevent the start of World War I. In 1928, Hamilton was one of two physicians appointed to a U.S. delegation to the League of National Health Commission. The recipient of numerous honorary degrees and awards, Hamilton was named New England’s “Woman of the Year” in medicine by the American Medical Women’s Association in 1956.  An 11-foot high bronze statue of a Black Watch soldier by William Birnie Rhind commemorates over 200 members of the Regiment who were killed or wounded in the South African War of 1900-02. The Black Watch, the oldest Highland Regiment, was formed by General Wade in 1739 to police the Highlands at a time when many of the clans harboured pro-Jacobite sympathies. Their name derived from the contrast of their dark green tartan against the regular red tunics of the British Army. The unveiling ceremony for the memorial, planned for 25th May, 1910, was cancelled because the nation was still in official mourning after the death of King Edward VII. Wikipedia.

Highland regiments in Natal devised aprons to conceal coloured kilts and sporrans. On the left of the line the Highland Brigade repeated the experience of Magersfontein, advancing across the Veldt in the face of heavy fire. But the British infantry was learning fast and better use was made of whatever cover could be found. Kelly-Kenny issued orders that no unit in his division was to attempt to cross the river. Two flanking attacks by Colville’s 9th Division assaulted the Boers from the West along the Modder and downstream from the East.

1900 Relief of Ladysmith. The Siege of Ladysmith. The Boer War. Siege from 2nd November 1899 to 27th February 1900. Ladysmith in northern Natal in South Africa. 2nd Gordon Highlanders: now the Highlanders. The troops on Wagon Hill were King’s Royal Rifles, Gordon Highlanders and Imperial Light Horse with a Hotchkiss gun. A confused fight took place in the dark. Ian Hamilton brought up reinforcements of Gordon Highlanders, Rifle Brigade and 21st and 53rd Field Batteries. Fierce fighting took place along Wagon Hill and in support of the beleaguered on Wagon Hill West and Caesar’s Camp. The Boers were finally driven back by a renewed attack reinforced by a dismounted squadron of 18th Hussars. was among the first British troops into Ladysmith and Pretoria. Winston Churchill and his cousin, the Duke of Marlborough, were able to get ahead of the rest of the troops in Pretoria, where they demanded and received the surrender of 52 Boer prison camp guards.
