February 19 1495 Sometime in February. In 1495, William Elphinstone, the Bishop of Aberdeen, petitioned Pope Alexander VI on behalf of King James IV to create the university to cure the ignorance he had witnessed within his parish and in the north generally. A papal bull in February 1494 founded the university; a Royal charter later in 1494 year recognized Aberdeen’s status as equal to that of Scotland’s two existing universities at Glasgow and Saint Andrews. George Keith, 5th Earl Marischal (c. 1553-1623), was educated at King’s College, Aberdeen, where he became a proficient classical scholar, afterwards studying divinity under Theodore Beza at Geneva. The 5th Earl built the tower house still extant on his ancestral lands at Keith Marischal.

1590 Robert Bruce, Minister at Edinburgh. King James [6th of Scotland] himself and James’ court had such high thoughts of Mr. Bruce, that when he [James 6th] went to bring home his queen anno 1590, at his [James 6th]   departure, he [James 6th] expressly desired Mr. Bruce to acquaint himself with the affairs of the country and the proceedings of the council, professing that he [James 6th] reposed more in him than the rest of his [Bruce’s] brethren, or even all his [James 6th]   nobles; and indeed in this his [James 6th] hopes were not disappointed, for the country was more quiet during his [James 6th] absence than either before or afterward: In gratitude for which Mr. Bruce received a congratulatory letter dated February 19th , 1590, wherein the king [James 6th] acknowledgeth, “He [James 6th]   would be obligated to him [Bruce] all his [James 6th] life for the pains he [Bruce] had taken in his [James 6th] absence to keep his [James 6th]   subjects in good order.” Yea, it is well known that the king [James 6th]   had that esteem for Mr. Bruce, that, upon a certain time before many witnesses, he [James 6th]   gave him [Bruce] this testimony, 1596 That he [James 6th]   judged him [Bruce] worthy of the half of his [James 6th]   kingdom; but he [James 6th]   proved in this, as in others of his [James 6th] fair promises, no slave to his word, for not many year’s after he [James 6th] obliged this good man, for his [Bruce] faithfulness, to depart and leave the kingdom. [Bruce believed James’ description of the Gowrie conspiracy [1600]to be false, i.e. the King was a ‘li-ar, li-ar, pants on fi-ar.’] Biographia Scoticana: OR, A

1751 did not occur in England, Ireland, British North America, and British colonies, as 1751 only had 282 days due to the Calendar Act of 1750. But 1751 did occur in Scotland, as 1751 had 365 days. The oldest known lunar calendar was found in Scotland; it dates back thousands of years. The site “also aligns on the south east horizon and a prominent topographic point associated with sunrise on the midwinter solstice. In doing so the monument anticipates problems associated with simple lunar calendars by providing an annual astronomic correction in order to maintain the link between the passage of time indicated by the Moon, the asynchronous solar year, and the associated seasons.”
