Humor 1650 Rene Descartes died in Stockholm Swedish empire.  Born 31 March 1596 Kingdom of France.  The auld alliance between Scotland and France dissolved in 1560, or not, as it continues to 1968. In Descartes’ lifetime  the Swedish empire allied with Scots Military officers during the 30 years war (1618 to 1648), and it was natural to be attractive to the brightest scientists of the century.  In 1619 Descartes had three visions and formulated analytical geometry, and the pursuit of truth was his work. Descartes also saw very clearly that all truths were linked with one another, so that finding a fundamental truth and proceeding with logic would open the way to all science.

In mathematics Descartes created the Cartesian coordinate system, allowing reference to a point in space as a set of numbers, and algebraic equations to be expressed as geometric shapes in a two dimensional coordinate system, leading to calculus and analysis. The Cartesian coordinate system is the basis for modern Television. Descartes is best known for the philosophy “Cogito ergo sum” (French: Je pense, donc je suis; I think, therefore I am), found in part IV of Discourse on the Method (1637).  So how did Descartes die? On story goes that Descartes went into a tavern in Stockholm, wherein the maitre d’ offered champagne and wine.  Descartes replied ‘Je ne pense pas.’ (‘I think not’) and POOF, he was gone!   Who knew?

1695 sometime in. Failed harvest, severe famine, 5-15 percent starved to death. The seven ill years was a period of national famine in Scotland in the 1690s, by four years of failed harvests (1695, 1696 and 1698–99). The result was severe famine and depopulation, particularly in the north. During this period, starvation probably killed 5–15 per cent of the Scottish population, but in areas like Aberdeenshire death rates reached 25 per cent.

Francis Pickens Miller in 1970, was delivered before leaving Scotland.

1751 did not occur in England, Ireland, British North America, and British colonies, as 1751 only had 282 days due to the Calendar Act of 1750. But 1751 did occur in Scotland, as 1751 had 365 Scottish days. A sidereal year is the time taken by the Earth to orbit the Sun once with respect to the fixed stars. Hence it is also the time taken for the Sun to return to the same position with respect to the fixed stars after apparently travelling once around the eliptic.

Stirling Castle is about 40 miles northwest of Edinburgh, at the lower crossing of the Firth of Forth, the traditional boundary between the Scottish Lowlands and Highlands.

Stirling Castle stands on Castle Hill, a large volcanic rocky outcropping surrounded by steep cliffs on three sides, making it ideal for defense. Mel Gibson’s movie Braveheart. William Wallace’s forces defeated the English at the Battle of Sterling Bridge in 1296. A few years later, King Edward I of England laid siege to Stirling Castle in April 1304 after defeating William Wallace’s troops at the Battle of Falkirk. A garrison of just 30 men held out for four months before succumbing to Edward’s troops. The Battle of Bannockburn in 1314 (depicted in Braveheart), ensured Scotland’s independence until James VI of Scotland succeeded to the English throne in 1601, was fought just miles from Stirling Castle. James VI’s mother, Mary Queen of Scots, lived at Stirling for the first few years. (Mary also lived in the most famous castle of France: Chenonceau Castle in the Loire Valley.)

In all, there have been over a dozen battles and sieges in Stirling Castle history. During the English Civil War, the Battle of Stirling was fought between forces loyal to the king (charles 1st) and those loyal to the Scottish Parliament. The most recent battle was in 1746, when Bonnie Prince Charlie laid siege to the fortification during the last Jacobite rebellion. In 1800 Stirling Castle became the army barracks and headquarters of the Argyll and Sutherland Highlanders, one of the most famous regiments in the British Army. The army stopped using the castle as a barracks in 1964.
