1394 In 1396, after his parents’ [John of Gaunt 1st Duke of Lancaster and Katherine Swynford] marriage, John [Beaufort] and his [3] siblings were legitimated by a papal bull. Early the next year, their legitimation was recognized by an act of Parliament, and then, a few days later, John was created Earl of Somerset (10 February 1397). John Beaufort was a grandson of Edward 3rd King of England. John’s daughter Joan Beaufort married James 1st, Stewart, King of Scots. Thus Beaufort became ancestor of all Scots Monarchs after 1437 with the crowning of James 2nd as king of Scots.

John of Gaunt, Duke of Lancaster, Duke of Aquitaine. John of Gaunt’s legitimate male heirs, the Lancasters, included Kings Henry IV, Henry V, and Henry VI. His other legitimate descendants included, by his first wife, Blanche, his daughters Queen Philippa of Portugal and Elizabeth, Duchess of Exeter; and by his second wife, Constance, his daughter Queen Catherine of Castile. By Kathryn Swinford, descendants included Henry Beaufort, Bishop of Winchester and eventually Cardinal; Joan Beaufort, Countess of Westmorland, grandmother of Kings Edward IV and Richard III (York); John Beaufort, 1st Earl of Somerset, the grandfather of Margaret Beaufort, the mother of King Henry VII Tudor; and Joan Beaufort, Queen of Scots, ancestress since 1603 of all sovereigns of England.

1566 Lord Darnley, King of Scots, murdered at Kirk of Field. Edinburgh. TG 31-117. (Sir Walter Scott gives the date as 1566, as the year 1566 did not end until March 24 (although changed in 1600), and which would have been the date recognized at the time, in Scotland and England.) James 6th inherited his father’s titles of Duke of Albany and Earl of Ross.

1567 same event as listed as 1566. An explosion destroys the Kirk o’ Field house in Edinburgh, Scotland. The second husband of Mary, Queen of Scots, Lord Darnley is found strangled, in what many believe to be an assassination. Wikipedia styles the year as 1567 (sic), back dating everything to January 1st, and causing much confusion in dating of events. Darnley was styled and recognized as King, at least by the English court of Elizabeth. As Mary (Queen of Scots) marries Bothwell (clan Hepburn) in May 1567, only 3 months after Darnley’s death, the time is compressed from February to May 1567, instead expanded from February 1566 to May 1567 (which was still only 3 months). The City of Albany New York, state capitol, is later named for this Dukedom. See Albany Georgia.

Lord Darnley is murdered – 1567 (sic). An explosion in the early hours of the morning at Kirk o’ Fields destroyed the lodging house of Lord Darnley. Mysteriously Darnley was unharmed by the blast by found dead, allegedly strangled, near by. Mary became a suspect. Video: Timewatch: The Fateful Century. 1987.

1678 Sometime in February. Highlanders return home after lawburrows persecuted the outlawed Presbyterian religion TG 51-211, 223. Lawburrows is a little-known civil action in Scots law initiated by one person afraid of another’s possible violence. The 1429 Act remains in force and says

It is statute ande ordanit that gif ony of the kingis liegis haf ony doute of his life outhir be dede or manance or violent presumpcioun ande he ask souerte of thaim that he doutis the schiref sal tak souerte of the party that the complante is maid apoun sa that the party playntife mak prufe of the dede or of manance or of the violent presumpcioun maid or done till hym.

Lawburrows enables people to “take the law into their own hands” by exercising their rights under civil law. The most common action against someone who threatens violence is interdict or court order, but this can be refused by the court on the grounds of public interest. Since public interest (the general effects of the action on the welfare of society) is involved, corroborative witnesses may be required. Interdict may require the defender to refrain from a specific conduct. The process is remarkable for its simplicity, speed of execution, low cost of process and the absolute certainty of the exact penalty should the order be contravened. Neither the police nor the Procurator Fiscal is involved unless there is a contravention of lawburrows.

Very roughly: If Alice is put in fear by Bob, Alice asks a Sheriff to hear the case against Bob (this is a civil action and so standard of proof is low). If proven, the Sheriff shall require a deposit from Bob. If, later, Alice shows the Sheriff that Bob has continued to put Alice in fear, the deposit is forfeited and divided equally between Alice and the Court. This does not preclude a criminal action being taken against Bob. Wikipedia.

1751 did not occur in England, Ireland, British North America, and British colonies, as 1751 only had 282 days due to the Calendar Act of 1750. But 1751 did occur in Scotland, as 1751 had 365 days. The Coptic calendar, also called the Alexandrian calendar, is used by the Coptic Orthodox Church and still used in Egypt. This calendar is based on the ancient Egyptian calendar. To avoid the calendar creep of the latter, a reform of the ancient Egyptian calendar was introduced at the time of Ptolemy III (Decree of Canopus, in 238 BC) which consisted of the intercalation of a sixth epagomenal day every fourth year. However, this reform was opposed by the Egyptian priests, and the idea was not adopted until 25 BC, when the Roman Emperor Augustus formally reformed the calendar of Egypt, keeping it forever synchronized with the newly introduced Julian calendar. Wikipedia. It was this Julian calendar which was repealed in 1751.
