August 9 1141 Winchester in London David 1 King of Scots visits niece widow and dowager empress Matilda. Matilda’s mother Matilda (wife of Henry 1st King of England) was sister to David, and both children of Malcolm III King of Scotland. The Castle at Winchester invested, by King Stephen’s brother. Matilda is wife of Geoffrey V of Anjou (1113-1151), and they were parents of Henry (born 1133) who will become King of England as Henry 2nd, ancestor of all English royalty henceforth, and Scots by 1513. Mary, Queen of Scots was represented by the crown, mace and sword. After a speech by William Maitland, the articles of the peace with France were read and confirmed. The Lords of the Articles were chosen – these decided the agenda for the full parliament session. Then all the lords processed with the Duke to the Netherbow, and back to the Palace. The whole town wore armour, with trumpets sounding, and all other kinds of music. Randolph was confident the Lords of the Articles would commune on the “dysannullinge” of Papal authority.

1586 Kiloch, Ochiltree, Ayrshire. The Killoch farm is mentioned as an ecclesiastical expropriation in the Register of the Great Seal of Scotland, A.D. 1580-95, p. 338, No. 1030, 20 Jac. VI; on 9 August, 1586, the ‘lands of Maynis de Uchiltree were grouped in a free barony ‘to be called Uchiltree, ‘and the itemized list of these lands includes ‘1 1/2 marcatas Killoch.’ The farm is referred to in the Ayr Index Locorum (1816) and James Paterson’s History of the Counties of Ayr and Wigton (1852) Vol. I Kyle, part 2, locates it on a map.        The freehold, of which the Sampsons are very proud, is unusual in an area where most farms and villages are tenant-occupied and belong to the Marquess of Bute. Dumfries House, seat of the Marquess’ eldest son, the Earl of Dumfries, is close to the village of Cumnock, southeast of Ochiltree. Cumnock (Cumnag in Gaelic) is a town in East Ayrshire, Scotland. Cumnock sits at the confluence of the Glaisnock Water and the Lugar Water. Earlier, these holdings were the seat of the Boswell family: the village northwest of Holmheed-Cumnock, named Auchinleck, was given by James IV to Thomas Boswell who fell at Flodden Field in 1513; his descendant, Alexander Boswell, father of Samuel Johnson’s biographer, took the name of Lord Auchinleck when named to the bench in 1754. Auchinleck House is due north of Ochiltree. The village church at Auchinleck contains a number of Boswell memorials; when the new kirk at Ochiltree was begun in 1797, James Boswell, the biographer, laid the corner-stone. (Cf. Helen Stevens’ Auchinleck: its History and Associations.) Cumnock in Ayr.

Three centuries later, John Murdoch, of New Cumnock in Ayrshire, composed these lines of farewell to his homeland:

Oh Scotland my country, my dear native home,

Thou land of the brave and the theme of my song,

Oh why should I leave thee and cross the deep sea,

To a strange land far distant lovely Scotland from thee …

But why should I linger or wish for to stay.

The voice of the Prophet is “haste, flee away. …”

1822 sometime in. The Entrance of George IV at the Palace of Holyroodhouse

Artist Sir David Wilkie 1828. Wilkie conveys magnificently, in this small sketch, the colourful pomp and ceremony of King George IV’s arrival at Holyrood House in Edinburgh in 1822. A fanfare of trumpets sounds as the kneeling Duke of Hamilton presents the keys of the palace to the king. Other nobles in attendance include the traditional custodians of the Honours of Scotland: the Crown, the Sceptre and the Sword of State. Brilliant touches of red, gold and white enrich the royal event unfolding before the theatrical backdrop of the palace architecture. Wilkie painted this as a preparatory study for his larger panel, now at Holyrood.
