1330 Sometime in August. Battle of Teba. King, Robert I of Scotland (the Bruce), body is buried in Dunfermline Abbey, while his heart is buried in Melrose Abbey. Robert’s embalmed heart was to be taken on crusade by his lieutenant and friend Sir James Douglas to the Holy Land.

1503 King James IV to marriage Margaret Tudor was celebrated in person in Holyrood Abbey. The rites were performed by the Archbishop of Glasgow and the Archbishop of York. James Hamilton, 1st Earl of Arran negotiated nephew James IV’s marriage and same day Lord Hamilton was created Earl of Arran, with the formal grant three days later, “for his nearness of blood” and his services at the time of the marriage. The marriage was known as the Union of the Thistle and the Rose (Stewart and Tudor, which in turn was the union of the Red (Lancaster) and White (York) Rose).

1588 – Anglo-Spanish War: Battle of Gravelines, English channel. The naval engagement ends, ending the Spanish Armada’s attempt to invade England.

1684 Booth died. George Booth, 1st Baron Delamer (August 1622 – 8 August 1684), known as Sir George Booth, 2nd Baronet, son of William Booth, the son and heir apparent to Sir George Booth, 1st Baronet, of the ancient family settled at Dunham Massey in Cheshire, by his wife Vere Egerton, daughter and co-heir of Sir Thomas Egerton. He took an active part in the English Civil War alongside his grandfather, Sir George Booth, 1st Baronet on the Parliamentarians’ side. He was returned to the Long Parliament as Member of Parliament for Cheshire in 1645.

1745 Aug. 8th, the first news of the PRINCE CHARLES EDWARD STUART’s landing reached Cope in Edinburgh, and he at once arranged to collect stores and assemble an army at Stirling (G.C.T. 7).

1801 – Thomas Cochrane, Lord Cochrane, received a promotion to the rank of post-captain. A caricature created in 1815 titled Things as they have been. Things as they now are. The left side of the image depicts Cochrane as a heroic naval officer. The right side depicts him as a disgraced civilian imprisoned within the walls of the King’s Bench Prison. The Lord of all, wanting to preserve America as a nation of liberty, allowed the English to arrest their best Combat Naval sea Captain and to sit out the War of 1812, and the battles of Baltimore and New Orleans.   Years later, all honors were restored to Cochrane. Leaving the years 1814 and 1815 a mystery in English and Scottish history.

1812 Thomas Cochrane, later 10th Earl of Dundonald (b 14.12.1775, d 31.10.1860, Admiral) had issue married (08.08.1812) Katherine Frances Corbet (d 25.01.1865, daughter of Thomas Barnes of Romford.) Cochrane married for love, declining an offer of lands and money from an Uncle, who planned other marriage for the Sailor.

1831 Joseph Smith the Prophet, in Jackson County, Missouri, (clan Mack of Inverness, Malcolm King O Scots) Doctrine and Covenants 60. For I, the Lord, rule in the heavens above, and among the armies of the earth.

1840 Elder Hedlock then went to Glasgow, where he hired a hall in which to preach, and on Aug. 8, 1840, raised up a branch of the Church of Jesus Christ in that city, consisting of 12 members, a membership which had increased in number to 74, two months later. The Glasgow Conference was organized soon afterwards, consisting of the branches of the Church in and near Glasgow.

1844 – Nauvoo Illinois, After a general assembly of the members, The Quorum of the Twelve Apostles, headed by Brigham Young, is reaffirmed as the leading body of The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints. Joseph Smith, Jr. President, and brother Hyrum, both scots descents, had been murdered 6 weeks previously.

2000 – Confederate submarine H.L. Hunley is raised to the surface after 136 years on the ocean floor, February 17, 1864, and 30 years after its discovery. Two developers James McClintock, and Baxter Watson, were of Scots descent.
