1554 Battle of Renty. Between France and the Holy Roman Empire at Renty, a northern French secondary theatre of the Italian Wars. The French were led by Francis, Duke of Guise, while the Imperial forces were led by Emperor Charles V of Habsburg. Scotland still allied with France. But not for much longer. Once broken, the Scots French alliance would not be restored for 3 centuries.

1560 sometime in, With the Scottish Reformation in 1560, a thousand years of monasticism in Scotland was stopped.

1588 sometime in August. Remnants of the Armada are circling Scotland. The execution of Mary Queen of Scots in 1587 was the final incentive for the attempted invasion by the Spanish Armada. The route of the Spanish Armada in 1588 up the Channel, into the North Sea and North About Scotland into the Atlantic and Ireland. The map shows the known wrecks of Armada ships. Of the 130 ships in the Armada, half were lost, many just disappearing. Battles at Eddystone, Portland, Isle of Wight, Calais and Gravelines. Of the Armada’s complement of 30,000 soldiers and sailors 20,000 were lost. El Gran Grifin was wrecked on Fare Isle to the North of Orkney. San Juan de Sicilia blew up in Tobermory Bay in Scotland. Spanish officers and crew taken in the Channel or wrecked on the Scottish coast seem to have been treated with consideration and repatriated as soon as Parma sent a ship to collect them. Francisco de Cuellar of the San Pedro, Spanish ship captain under sentence for failing to keep station, was reprieved by Medina Sidonia, only to be ship wrecked on the coast of Ulster while still in the custody of the Judge Advocate General, who sadly was drowned. De Cuellar survived, taken by a local Irish chief whose castle he defended against the English, crossed to Scotland where he and some one hundred and twenty wrecked Spaniards were collected by a ship sent from the Netherlands by the Duke of Parma.

Auchinleck (okh-in-lek; Scots, Affleck from Scottish Gaelic: Achadh nan Leac meaning “field of the flagstones”)[4] is a village five miles south-east of Mauchline, and a couple of miles north-west of Cumnock in East Ayrshire, Scotland.  Near the village (Auchinleck Estate) is Auchinleck House, past home of the lawyer, diarist and biographer James Boswell, 9th Laird of Auchinleck.
