As Knox’s second wife, when Knox was fifty-nine and she was in her teens (perhaps 16), Knox married Margaret Stewart, also daughter of Andrew, second Lord Ochiltree, descended from King Robert II by a collateral Stewart line (Duke of Albany above) Andrew Stewart, 2nd Lord of Ochiltree in Ayr (circa 1521-1593) member of the Lords of the Congregation, had a daughter Anne Stewart (‘Nan’) who married Andrew Millar I of Temple and Killoch. In 1559 John Knox returned from ministering in Geneva to lead the Calvinist reformation in Scotland. The English resident diplomat in Scotland, Thomas Randolph noted that Margaret Stewart was a near kinswoman of the Duke, meaning James Hamilton, Duke of Châtellerault (Andrew’s (Lord Ochiltree) mother was the Duke’s half-sister). Randolph thought that Cecil would think his report madness.[3] They were married on Palm Sunday after the banns had been proclaimed in St Giles, Edinburgh. Randolph wrote that the Queen [Mary of Scots] was angry at the marriage because Margaret was of the royal ‘bluid and name. Wikipedia reports.

The Duke’s half sister was Margaret Hamilton. Ancestor of Reese Witherspoon.

1700 The Darien colony on the Isthmus between the Pacific and Atlantic, between North and South America. Sometime in April 1700. ‘The fate of the colony now came to a crisis. The Spaniards had brought from the Pacific a force of sixteen hundred men, who were stationed at a place called Tubucantee, waiting the arrival of an armament of eleven ships, with troops on board, destined to attack fort Saint Andrew. Captain [Sir Walter Scott’s Tales of a Grandfather-59-45] Campbell,

who, by the unanimous consent of the settlers, was chosen to the supreme military command, marched against them with two hundred men, surprised and stormed their camp, and dispersed their army, with considerable slaughter. But in returning from his successful expedition, Campbell had the mortification to learn that the Spanish ships had arrived before the harbour, disembarked their troops, and invested the place. A desperate defence was maintained for six weeks until loss of men, want of ammunition, and the approach of famine, compelled the colonists to an honourable surrender. The survivors of this unhappy settlement were so few, and so much exhausted, that they were unable to weigh the anchor of the vessel, called The Rising Sun, in which they were to leave the fatal shore, without assistance from the conquering Spaniards.’

1775 Boston Massachusetts. Gun control. The English have a secret plan to disarm the colonials, by confiscating the Colonials personal pistols and muskets. Across the ocean from Scotland, hundreds of thousands of Scots and their descendants are scattered 2,000 miles up and down the Atlantic coast of the colonies, many having been forced by the Highland Clearances. The English occupied Boston 3 years earlier and have identified different caches of colonial arms, particularly those at Lexington and Concord. Gun control will jump start the War of Independence and be the spark for the American Revolution. About 700 British Army regulars in Boston, under Lieutenant Colonel Francis Smith, were given secret orders to capture and destroy rebel gunpowder and supplies reportedly stored by the Massachusetts militia at Concord.
