Shakespeare (1590) wrote about Scots history in Macbeth. Henry Fielding (1747) wrote Joseph Andrews after the manner of Cervantes (Don Quixote being the first novel, and Joseph Andrews being the first novel in English). Romancing the Stones

In 1850, a powerful storm stripped grass and sand from a massive dune known as Skara Brae in the Orkney Islands, revealing the ruins of Neolithic dwellings. Skara Brae, now also the name of the site, is considered one of the oldest Neolithic villages in Scotland and the best-preserved in northern Europe. In its “houses,” original stone bed platforms, tables and hearths are to be found. Tunnel passageways between rooms are similar to those in the ancient village’s tombs.

1791 James Buchanan (Scots) (April 23, 1791 – June 1, 1868) 15th President, 1857-61: Born in a log cabin (which has been relocated to his auld school in Mercersburg, Pennsylvania), ‘Old Buck’ cherished his origins: “My Ulster bluid is a priceless heritage”. The Buchanans were originally from Deroran, near Omagh in County Tyrone where the ancestral home still stands.

In March 1857, along with his inauguration, the novice President Buchanan, as a ‘doughface’ Northerner and pro slavery Southern sympathizer, received reports from federal judges in the Utah Territory that the Judges were driven from their posts by the Saints. Previously Pierce refused Utah statehood and the Latter-day Saints feared the loss of life and property (as had occurred in New York, Pennsylvania, Ohio, Missouri, and Illinois). The Saints were unionists (i.e. anti secessionist anti slavery).   Accepting wild false rumors that Utah was in open rebellion against the United States, Buchanan sent Colonel Albert Sidney Johnston’s Army in November of 1857 to replace Brigham Young as Governor with the gentile Alfred Cumming (both Scots).

Governor Young’s notice of this replacement was not delivered because President Pierce had annulled the Utah mail contract, in order to isolate the territory. Young mustered a two-week expedition destroying pasture for the Army wagon trains, oxen and property, trapping the Army on the high plains of Wyoming where the continental divide is at 8,000 feet above sea level, during the winter. Thomas L. Kane negotiated a peace. The new governor was placed in office, and the Utah War ended. The President granted amnesty to all inhabitants who would respect the authority of the government. Within 4 years, now General Albert Sidney Johnston, moved from invading Utah Territory, to resigning his United States commission in a real open rebellion, invading the United States. Johnston was killed at the Battle of Shiloh April 6, 1862.
