The Billiards Room where Twain wrote his books. Along the left side of the photo, under the picture on the wall, in the shadow, was Twain’s Remington typewriter, manufactured in Bridgeport Connecticut. About 1873. For the first time in recorded history, writing could be performed with both hands, legibly, making writing a minimum of four times faster than pen and quill (and up to 60 words per minute, and 120 words per minute in short spurts). Twain paid about $120 (a years salary for a wage laborer) for his typewriter, and wrote the novel Tom Sawyer, the first such book to be drafted on this technology. Twain’s Remington typewriter featured the QWERTY layout (from the first six letters on the third row of letters), which layout was designed to make typing difficult to learn, slow to type, and long and hard to operate, to avoid jamming keys from the tiny hammers, springs, and pins used in its operation, by putting least used letters on the home row, such as F, J, K, colon, and apostrophe. This hindrance was accomplished by assigning the most frequently used letters in English (E,T, N, O, R, I) to the upper and lower rows; doubling and tripling the distance fingers would move. This required much wasted effort, fatigue and even injury of nerves and muscles. Over the next century, and over 100 layouts in patents, moving all letters around, proposed efficient home rows, but required total relearning of the keyboard. This total relearning was solved by Finger Relief in 1980.
