April 18 1584 RUTHVEN, WILLIAM, 4th Lord Ruthven and 1st Earl of Gowrie (1541?–1584), Provost and Lieutenant of Perth, Lord High Treasurer, brought to Edinburgh for trial. Not good.

1661 sometime in April. The Great Scottish Witch Hunt of 1661–1662 begins. Continuing the tradition of the five nationwide witch hunts in Scottish history, the others being The Great Scottish Witch Hunt of 1590–1591, The Great Scottish Witch Hunt of 1597, The Great Scottish Witch Hunt of 1628–1631, and The Great Scottish Witch Hunt of 1649. Thousands were burned, drowned or hung. The exact number of those executed is unknown, largely because they were tried by different legal courts. WIKIPEDIA.

1775 Battle of Lexington and Concord, Massachusetts Bay colony. Joseph Warren signals Paul Revere to begin Revere’s ride. Minutemen receive rumors of English secret plans to disarm, trick and seize personal pistols and muskets. It is not about crime, but power. Across the ocean from Scotland, hundreds of thousands of Scots and their descendants are scattered 2,000 miles up and down the Atlantic coast of the colonies, many having been forced by the Highland Clearances after the ’45 (1745 Jacobite uprising). The English military watch the colonial arms, particularly those at Lexington and Concord. English forcing Gun control will cause the spark for the American Revolution.

1925 April 4, two cents. Birth of Liberty, Henry Sandham” painting. On April 19, 1775, Lt. Col. Francis Smith’s British unit scattered a company of local Minute Men at Lexington, killing several when authorized gun fire occurred. His mission was to seize the gunpowder of the Massachusetts Provincial Congress at Concord.

1975 April 19. Birth of Liberty, Henry Sandham” This same painting was used on a 1925 postage stamp that was part of a three -stamp series. Memories of English gun control result in the Second Amendment to the Constitution in 1790.

1780 Battle of Fishing Creek South Carolina. Wikipedia. Two days after Camden, Fraser’s Highlanders ( the 71st Regiment of foot) fought again, this time under Lieutenant Colonel Banastre Tarleton’s command against Colonel Thomas Sumter at the Battle of Fishing Creek on 18 August 1780. In this engagement, Lieutenant Colonel Tarleton’s 150-man British force found a poorly defended American camp containing Colonel Sumter and about 800 men. In the battle, Captain Campbell of the 71st’s light infantry formed his men up with the cavalry for the spontaneous attack. Campbell was killed but nearly the entire American force was killed or captured; with Sumter narrowly escaping by leaping upon his horse and riding, naked or nearly so, to the nearby town of Lancaster, South Carolina.

1800 Master and Commander, The story starts out on April 18, 1800, in Port Mahon, Minorca, a base of the Royal Navy at that time. A shipless lieutenant wasting away in port, Jack Aubrey, meets Stephen Maturin, a poor half-Irish and half-Catalan physician and natural philosopher, at an evening concert at the Governor’s Mansion.

1st edition (US). Closely based on the historical feats of Lord Cochrane, O’Brian’s novel is set in the Napoleonic Wars.

1868 John Nicholson, Scot. Author of Come follow Me. “Deseret News” and George Q. Cannon, proprietor, hired him. For the following twenty-five years John was constantly with the “News” save for brief intermissions while on a mission or performing other duties. John served as city editor and associate editor with Charles W. Penrose. Poems and hymns, among them, “Come Follow Me,” “While of These Emblems We Partake,” “Bodies of Our Dead Are Laid,” and “Nations Bow to Satan’s Thrall.”

1912 Carpathia docked at 9.30 pm on 18 April at New York’s Pier 54 and was greeted by some 40,000 people waiting at the quayside in heavy rain. 710 people survived the disaster and were conveyed by Carpathia to New York, Titanic‘s original destination, while 1,517 people lost their lives.
