‘30,000 rank-and-file government employees make over $190,823’ – Well, how much over? In addition to the salary, the employee gets 12 days of paid sick leave (not charged to holidays or weekends), plus 24 days of paid annual leave. For a salary of $190,823, these 36 paid days of leave are worth about an additional $27,400 per year, all income and social security tax free. Plus 11 paid holidays, sometimes 12 (when Christmas is on Tuesday or Thursday), worth $9,159 annually, all income and social security tax free. In addition, the employees are offered up to 5% matching paid into a tax deferred account at the Thrift Savings Plan, worth about $9,541 a year. And $6500 paid in Social Security tax as the employer’s share. In addition, each has health care subsidized at about $7,800 per person, or for a couple $15,600 per year, all income and social security tax free. In addition, each has life insurance in the amount of the salary, which would cost about $4,800 per year if purchased on the commercial insurance market, all income and social security tax free. Employees also receive about $250 a month (tax free and not reportable) for mass transit (to encourage keeping cars off the highways) or, in lieu of the mass transit, or Free parking in the office buildings or on Federal property, worth about the mass transit amounts for $3,000 a year, all income and social security tax free. Free flu shots, are worth another $20 a year, all income and social security tax free. Some have access to discounted breakfast, lunch, or dinner on site, worth another $10 a day, or $2,000 a year, all income and social security tax free. Some have smart phones on loan 24/7, or government vehicles. Those living over seas (military, civilan civil service, state department), have incentives for housing and recreation, and many sales tax free options. So these benefits, 90% are tax free, the rest tax deferred, are worth an additional $68,479 on a salary of $190,823. Or, add 35% to the wages reported for most Federal Employee (with a spouse), earning over the Social Security wage cap, and 33% for any single employees.
