Zsa Zsa Gabor, the late Hollywood actress and socialite, was better known for the jaded witticisms she coined during a life of frivolity and glamour than the lines she delivered on a film set.
The Hungarian-born starlet, who has died aged 99, was a pioneer of the “famous for being famous” lifestyle. While she appeared in more than 70 films, she is best remembered for her many marriages and her candid, witty turn of phrase. Here are some of her most memorable lines.
- “I am a marvellous housekeeper. Every time I leave a man I keep his house.”
- “I believe in large families. Every woman should have at least three husbands.”
- “I don’t remember anybody’s name. Why do you think the ‘dahling’ thing started?” – Referring to her habit of calling everyone “darling”, with a distinctive Hungarian accent.
- “I never hated a man enough to give him his diamonds back.”
- “My husband said it was him or the cat. I miss him sometimes.”
- “Parisian men make love all day and have no time to work; American men work all day and have no time for love.”
- “How many husbands have I had? You mean apart from my own?”
