YOU and I ARE RESPONSIBLE for Today’s Politics

By USN Columnist Mary Wilson Burkett / Feb 19,2021

Much to his credit, a state legislator spent more than an hour on a Zoom call with over a dozen citizens who are supportive of a bill he is sponsoring and working very hard to get passed in this year’s legislative session. I’m certain every attendee appreciated his willingness to be on the call and to be forthright with us. Because of his willingness to join us and answer questions I thanked him on Facebook and hope he sees that.

At the same time, the meeting reminded me of how convoluted politics have become. One particular politician came up in the conversation as being key to getting this bill passed. One person. One very powerful person needs to be in favor of this bill for it to pass. When and why did we allow one person to amass so much power that without their blessing, a bill cannot be passed? It’s shameful.

Bills proposed at any level of government should be proposed for the benefit of the electorate, ensuring that their rights are protected. That’s how it’s supposed to work. It doesn’t work that way in reality. It’s tragic. It’s our tragedy and until we are willing to fix it by voting out people who have so obviously accumulated power for themselves, it’s not going to change.

GOD BLESS AMERICA!
