Socialist, Conservative Parties Continue Power Struggle As Venezuelan Economy Crumbles

The Venezuelan Supreme Court, stacked with judges appointed by the current Socialist government, denied the Conservative Party’s move to shorten the president’s term Monday.
Conservative politicians who run Venezuela’s National Assembly have proposed an amendment to the Venezuelan Constitution to shorten the president’s term to four years from the current six.
Venezuela has been stuck in a dangerous state of political stalemate since the December, 2015, elections in which Conservatives won control of the country’s National Assembly. The December elections marked the first time Conservatives gained considerable legislative power since 1999.
Despite being technically granted wide authority in the country’s Constitution, the National Assembly has constantly been blocked by former bus driver and Hugo Chavez crony President Nicolas Maduro through executive order. Dysfunctional politics in the country has only worsened the slow burning economic disaster the country is going through.
As previously reported by The Daily Caller News Foundation, malls in Venezuela were shuttered in February to save electricity. Government employees also have four day weekends as Fridays are now meant to be used as days the government can save electricity. Four hour blackouts are mandatory daily throughout the country except in Caracas and Vargas.
