1308 Scholar and philosopher John Duns Scotus died. His dry subtleties led to the word “Duns” or “dunce” meaning dull and incapable of learning. Beatified by Pope John Paul II in 1993.  JOHN DUNS SCOTUS Theologian and philosopher c. (1266–1308) founded a school of Scholasticism known as Scotism. During his tenure at Oxford, His sarcophagus bears the Latin inscription: “Scotia brought me forth. England sustained me. France taught me. Cologne holds me.” He was made a saint by Pope John Paul II in 1993.

1582 RUTHVEN, WILLIAM, 4th Lord Ruthven and 1st   Earl of Gowrie (1541?–1584), Provost and Lieutenant of Perth, Lord High Treasurer, After the ‘Raid of Ruthven’ the English ambassador, at the request of Queen Elizabeth, was directed to use every means to obtain possession of the silver casket containing the letters of Mary Queen of Scots to Bothwell,[Bothwell Hepburn 1245 2Montgomerie2Blair 2Cochrane2Miller2Simmons2Choate zoe ToaG]which it was stated that Morton had delivered into the keeping of Gowrie (Bowes to Walsingham, 8 Nov. 1582, in Bowes’s Correspondence, Surtees Soc. p. 236); but Gowrie, while declaring that the lords had determined to keep them in vindication of their conduct, declined at first to state whether they were in his possession or not (ib. p. 240); then, while practically admitting that they were in his possession, he affirmed that he could not give them up without the king’s privity (ib. p. 254), and finally he insisted that it was necessary to keep their whereabouts secret from the king, as the Duke of Lennox had sought earnestly to get possession of them (ib. p. 265). Their custody cannot be traced further.

The Hon. Alexander Hore-Ruthven served as Governor-General of Australia and was created Earl of Gowrie in 1945.

1752 James Stewart, known as James of the Glens, Seamus a’ Ghlinne and James Stewart of Acharn (c. 1698 – November 8, 1752 in Glen Duror, Scotland) was a Scotsman famous for being wrongfully accused and hanged for being accessory to the killing of Colin Roy Campbell (a.k.a. “The Red Fox”), a government factor of estates forfeited by pro-Jacobite clans following the Rising of 1745. The murder is famously dubbed the Appin Murder. There is a movement afoot to gain a Free Pardon for James of the Glens. In 2008 it was before the Scottish Criminal Cases Review Commission but was denied due to the case being so auld it was not in the interest of justice.
