1745 The Prince [Charles Edward] arrived at Manchester, there was a still stronger appearance of favour to his cause; bonfires, acclamations, the display of white cockades, solemnized his arrival, and a considerable number of persons came to kiss his hand, and to offer their services. About two hundred men of the populace were here enlisted, and being embodied with the few who had before joined his standard, composed what was termed the Manchester regiment. The officers were in general respectable men, enthusiasts in the Jacobite cause; and Mr. Townley, [Colonel Francis Towneley of the Burnley Towneley family) a gentleman of good family, and [TG79-223] considerable literary accomplishments, was named colonel of the regiment.

1825 Sir Walter Scott’s journal reaction to a letter he received from Poet Robert Southey on November 29, 1825. ‘A letter from Southey, malcontent about Murray having accomplished the change in the Quarterly without speaking to him, and quoting the twaddle of some auld woman, male or female, about Lockhart’s earlier jeux d’esprit, but concluding most kindly that in regard to my daughter and me he did not mean to withdraw. That he has done yeoman’s service to the Review is certain, with his genius, his universal reading, his powers of regular industry, and at the outset a name which, though less generally popular than it deserves, is still too respectable to be withdrawn without injury.’
