Beirut used to be an educational center of learning. The University of Beriutus was ancient, and had thriving Muslim, Jewish, Christian communities. Go to Gibbon’s Decline and Fall of the Roman Empire (published in the 1780s) for details on ancient Beirut ( 1st century AD to 15th Century AD). After WW2, as the area became unstable, the Christians in the community (and others) began to plan ahead. The parents directed their children into careers which could be international, such as medicine (law (attorney work) is totally local, the same for local retail, or farms, vineyards) or math and physics. Expectant mothers would also fly to the U.S. to have babies, and return to Lebanon. This went on for decades. Sometime After the Civil war broke in Lebanon (1974 – 1989), the U.S. State Department sent in planes to ferry out and evacuate all Americans, estimating about 2 to 3 thousand with US passports. Surprise, between 15 and 20 thousand US passport holders showed up to escape. From decades of planning, they had their passports.
