The GOP National Convention in Cleveland featured more controversy, but also more progress in uniting the Party, on Day Three. Second-place finisher Ted Cruz provided the fireworks, while VP nominee Mike Pence brought Republicans to their feet in unity.

Keynote Speakers

Trump invited Cruz to speak, knowing that Cruz would not endorse him. Cruz’ speech was moving, with a tribute to fallen police officers and a call for Republicans to defend our values. He concluded by inviting us to vote our conscience, for the candidates who would stand for liberty and the Constitution. Though the Utah delegation was cheering loudly for Cruz, including Senator Lee, who was leading shouts of “Ted, Ted, Ted,” many of the pro-Trump delegates, unhappy that Cruz did not endorse, booed and jeered at him.

But the convention moved on, with Donald’s Trump’s younger son, Eric, speaking of his father as a man who could no longer stand by and watch what was happening to our country, a man willing to put aside his business and lifestyle to help make America great again. He said that Donald has common sense, knows the value of a tax dollar, and will bring the American Dream to all Americans.

Following an excellent message from former House Speaker Newt Gingrich, who made the case for why Trump, not Clinton, will make America safer, vice-presidential nominee Mike Pence gave the concluding remarks. He began with self-deprecating humor, saying that Trump, the charismatic showman, picked him, a boring Midwestern governor, to “balance the ticket.” Pence said that his best decision was marrying his wife and his best job was as dad to their three children.

Pence then moved on to make the case for electing Donald Trump. He detailed how Hillary Clinton’s plan is to continue ObamaCare, increase spending, and raise taxes. He proclaimed that the current poor economic times may be the best that the Democrats can do, but it is not the best Republicans can do. Declaring that conservative principles work whenever they are tried, Pence promised that he and Trump would put those principles into action. He concluded on a humble note, acknowledging that we must pray and trust in God for our future progress.

Opening Speakers

The convention had started with a Boy Scout Troop leading the Pledge, a beautiful rendition of the Anthem, and a prayer by Nathan Johnson, a member of the LDS Church. As noted in my previous reports, the Party has shown its diversity in the opening and closing prayers, which included a moving benediction last night by a Greek Orthodox Archbishop.

Conservative women fired up the crowd early in the evening. Talk show host Laura Ingraham spoke about how she, as a single mother, is counting on Donald Trump to help bring a better future for her children. Florida Attorney General Pam Bondi declared that Trump will support the rule of law and roll back unconstitutional executive orders. She contrasted this with Hillary Clinton, who doesn’t think that the law applies to her. Businesswoman Michelle Van Etten, who started her own business and whose husband home schools their children, spoke of how Trump will support economic opportunity and end Common Core.

New perspective! I am letting an alternate delegate use my floor pass and I am sitting up top in the nosebleed section.

Next up were minority speakers, showing their support for Trump. Ralph Alvarado, Jr., the first Hispanic state senator in Kentucky history, said his parent were immigrants who taught him to work hard and never give up. He noted that the Hispanic community just wants to live the American Dream and declared that Hillary Clinton has “failed” Hispanics and doesn’t deserve their votes. Black Pastor Darrell Scott, in preacher’s cadence, proclaimed that Donald Trump will rebuild trust and help us stand together as Americans, “One nation, under God, indivisable, with Liberty and Justice for all.”
