Border patrol agents discovered an 800-yard tunnel — the longest known cartel tunnel — connecting Tijuana and San Diego, and it contained one ton of cocaine and seven tons of marijuana.

Six people were captured by the authorities for their involvement with the illicit tunnel on Wednesday, according to IB Times UK. The tunnel goes “from a house in Tijuana, Baja California, Mexico to an outdoor fenced-in commercial lot in an Otay Mesa industrial park, about 500 yards north of the international border,” according to a press release from the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Southern District of California.

Typically, drug smuggling tunnels specialize in transporting just one sort of drug, which more often than not is marijuana. This tunnel was odd because it was used for both marijuana and coke trafficking. The U.S. Attorney’s press release also indicated the tunnel was ” equipped with rail and ventilation systems, lights and a sophisticated large elevator leading from the tunnel into a closet inside the Tijuana residence.”

U.S. Attorney Laura Duffy admitted in a press conference announcing the major discovery that she thinks the tunnel “is a bit ingenious.” Duffy described the tunnel as “a rabbit hole” and that “it’s something completely different than what we’ve seen.”

The press release concludes by stating that “in the last five years, federal authorities have detected more than 75 cross-border smuggling tunnels, most of them in California and Arizona.”
