December 14  1542 James V Stewart, King of Scots dies. 1542 – Princess Mary Stuart, becomes Mary, Queen of Scots, at age 1 week old.

James V dies, Mary Stuart becomes Queen – 1542. On hearing of the defeat at Solway Moss, 24 November 1542, James fled to Falkland Palace. Already ill with fever, James’ health deteriorated. 1542 – James Hamilton, 1st Earl of Arran (1475–1529), married firstly in 1490 Elizabeth Home by whom he had two daughters; Arran divorced Elizabeth in 1504. Arran married secondly in 1516, Janet Bethune, daughter of Sir David Bethune, 1st of Creich and Janet Duddlingston. by whom he had three children including his heir, James Hamilton, Duke of Châtellerault, 2nd Earl of Arran (c.1516- 22 January 1575), heir presumptive to the Kingdom of Scotland (2 July 1536 – 22 May 1540), (April 1541- 8 December 1542), (14 December 1542 – 19 June 1566), (29 July 1567 – 22 January 1575); Regent of Scotland (1542–1554)) .

1581 RUTHVEN, WILLIAM, fourth Lord Ruthven and first Earl of Gowrie (1541?–1584), Provost and Lieutenant of Perth, Lord High Treasurer, granted the lordship of Abernethy (ib. p. 296).

1647 – sometime in December – In December 1647 a faction in the Covenanters agreed to a secret agreement with King Charles (1st) known as The Engagement, in which Charles promised that if the Covenanters would support him militarily he would support the establishment of Presbyterianism, in England for a period of three years. The faction known as the Kirk Party, strongly influenced by Archibald Campbell, 1st Marquess of Argyll were opposed, because Charles refused to take the National Covenant personally and they feared he would not honour the agreement if he were restored to power.

1775 – Thomas Cochrane, 10th Earl of Dundonald, 19th century Royal Navy Admiral and British Whig Party politician born. Married (08.08.1812) Katherine Frances Corbet (d 25.01.1865, daughter of Thomas Barnes of Romford).

1814 – Admiral Sir Alexander Forrester Inglis Cochrane led the British force that won the Battle of Lake Borgne, Louisiana. On the advance against New Orleans, during the War of 1812 (America’s name for the Napoleonic Wars – England’s name) Sir Alexander Cochrane, then a vice admiral, served as Commander-in-Chief of the British North American Station. He is going to lose the battle of New Orleans.

1819 Alabama becomes a state, with Scottish names as follows- Wikipedia Douglas, Inverness, Bullock County, Inverness, Shelby County,  Kennedy, Lauderdale County, Lawrence County, Lee County, Lenox, Lynn, Marshall County, McIntosh, McKenzie. Cross of Saint Andrew flag adopted 1895.

1849 Patrick Fraser Tytler (30 August 1791 – 14 December 1849) was a Scottish historian. The son of Lord Woodhouselee, he was born in Edinburgh, where he attended the Royal High School. Tytler was called to the bar in 1813; in 1816 he became King’s counsel in the Exchequer, and practised as an advocate until 1832. He moved to London, and it was largely owing to his efforts that a scheme for publishing state papers was carried out. Tytler was one of the founders of the Bannatyne Club and of the English Historical Society.

1910 Andrew Carnegie (Dunfermline, Fife, Scotland) deed of gift, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace, presented in Washington on December 14, 1910. Carnegie charged trustees to use the fund to “hasten the abolition of international war, the foulest blot upon our civilization,” and he gave his trustees “the widest discretion as to the measures and policy they shall from time to time adopt” in carrying out the purpose of the fund. Founder trustees included Harvard University president Charles William Eliot, philanthropist Robert S. Brookings, former U.S. Ambassador to Great Britain Joseph Hodges Choate. Within 4 years the Great War begins, which lays the foundation for World War Two and the Cold War (some termed as World War Three), and Global War on Terror.
