The GOP Convention Report
Day Two of the Republican National Convention in Cleveland was “huge” for Donald Trump, but disappointing for most of the Utah delegation, as Trump was nominated and received the votes to win the GOP Presidential nomination. After the traditional pledge, anthem, and a prayer by a Sikh delegate from California, the process began with Sen. Jeff Sessions nominating Donald Trump. Sessions declared that Trump was the one candidate who was ready to take on America’s immigration and job loss problems. No other candidate’s names were placed in nomination.
According to the new RNC Rules, each State’s delegates were bound to vote according to their State’s rules. The State delegations, in alphabetical order, began to announce their votes by telling how many delegate were being awarded to each candidate. Trump’s home State of New York was allowed to vote out of turn and have the privilege of putting Trump over the total needed to win the nomination, which was celebrated with cheering, photos, and an instrumental version of Sinatra’s “New York, New York.”
Utah was among the last to vote and announced its 40 delegates for Ted Cruz. However, since the Utah rule says that Utah must vote for the remaining candidate with the most votes and since the RNC concluded that Cruz was no longer a candidate, the convention secretary recorded Utah’s votes for Donald Trump. This surprised and upset many in our delegation, as we were not aware that the RNC was going to take that interpretation, since Cruz had suspended his campaign, but had not terminated it or released his delegates.
Regardless of the disappointment felt by Utah’s Cruz delegates, the Trump nomination moved forward. Governor Mike Pence of Indiana was approved by acclamation of the delegates to be the Party’s Vice Presidential nominee and then Donald Trump made a brief live video appearance to express his pleasure and pride at the results and to promise great things in his speech on Thursday.
Speakers were then rolled out to praise Trump and vilify Hillary Clinton: — Governor Asa Hutchinson and AG Leslie Rutledge of Arkansas, who both noted that Hillary, despite being the former First Lady of their State, does not represent Arkansas values. — Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, stating that Hillary is not qualified to be President.
— Speaker Paul Ryan, who laid out the case against Democratic policies and called for the GOP to pursue a united conservative agenda with Trump in the White House.
— Governor Chris Christie winding up the crowd with an indictment of Hillary Clinton for being guilty of botching foreign policy in Libya, Syria, China, and Iran and harming national security with her email server scheme.
— Trump’s youngest daughter Tiffany, a recent college graduate, speaking of how her father brings out the best in people.
Somewhat surprisingly, my favorite speaker of the night was Donald Trump, Jr., who made a solid case of how the Democrats have failed America and how his father’s policies will return us to strength and prosperity. His comments on the importance of preserving the integrity of the Supreme Court and protecting the Second Amendment were particularly appealing.
The Utah delegation ended the day with a late-night pizza party sponsored by Senator Lee. He consoled us with the message that, though we may have lost this nomination battle, he is confident that better times are yet to come and that there is no one with whom he would rather be in a fox hole than Utah’s delegates.
