The University of Virginia (UVA) will host a bizarre ballet Wednesday evening to raise awareness about global warming, according to an advertisement for the performance obtained by The Daily Caller News Foundation.
The ballet is called ICE CYCLES, and plans on “expressing the fragility and dynamism of the Arctic icescape” by featuring special snow and ice based music and choreography. The ballet “transports the dynamism and fragility of sea ice to the stage as a multimedia artwork for dance, music, costume, video and light,” according to its description on UVA’s website.
The advertisement obtained by The DCNF calls ICE CYCLES an “astounding multimedia dance/music performance about the precarity of our Arctic icescapes and global climate change.”
Choreographer Jody Sperling’s 2014 visit to the Chukchi Sea, north of the Bering Strait, inspired the production. During the 43-day journey, the choreographer “had the opportunity to dance at a dozen ice deployments,” according to the event’s website.
“It’s so bizarre that this is happening on Grounds. I think my alma mater can do better,” said a UVA alum who spoke to The DCNF on the condition of anonymity. “When Thomas Jefferson founded the University of Virginia, I really doubt that politicized interpretative dances about ice were in his vision. I’m a lot less likely to donate to UVA after this.”
The event is being presented by the Climate Cultures Symposium, Environmental Humanities, and the McIntire Department of Music. The ballet will be held at the University’s Old Cabell Hall at 8PM. The performance is free for students if they order tickets from the UVA Arts Box Office.
UVA is a public university and receives funding directly from Virginia taxpayers and indirectly from the federal government. The average out-of-state UVA student spends $58,518 to $59,498 annually to attend the college. The average in state student pays $28,932. UVA was listed as the second most expensive public university in America in the 2013 U.S. News & World Report rankings.
